Amazing job, Mike! Hard to imagine they are the same car. I know the hours, and $$$, add up quickly, but look at the end result. I hope you get the mechanicals squared away, so you can start showing it off. You deserve it.

Oh, and sell your '85 air dam to me to finance some tires for your ride. I know someone that's still looking.

2H--California cars were plated as early as 1987. It's come along way from what you described to me when you bought it! This car looks like somebody put about ten grand into it

God I hope it wasn't 10K, but I'm way too afraid to add up the receipts. Worst part is I still have to find and buy the wolf wheel, cal custom alarm, Kenwood stereo and speakers, Hayashi wheels, tires, suspension parts, and headlight covers...unless I decide to rock my headlight louvers instead. Lol. None of that (including all that's been spent to get to this point) includes a professional resto and paint job. So when it's all said and done I will have a 40K dollar Saleen that's worth about 9K.

Gotta love restoring foxbody Mustangs. Lol

Ha!! I can relate with my SVO, a lot of coin to win a "lexan" trophy. One of these days maybe the Fox cars will appreciate similar to the early models... I would think the early Saleens will be one of the cars to own.

Nice job and glad your continuing to improve her!

Sowaxman, I did all the work myself on the wheels from..sanding to polishing. It was one of the hardest and most time consuming jobs I've ever attempted and more than a few times during the process I regretted my decision to do them myself. I'm not a fan of black wheels and I couldn't afford to buy a new set, so I had to make due with what I had. My first thought was to paint the wheels silver, so they were at least the correct color for my car (even if they weren't the correct Hayashi's). Before I got started I posted a thread asking questions about painting mesh wheels, and fellow member "theWizard" showed me a pic of the mesh wheels he polished. Once I saw those I knew that was the direction I wanted to go in. 6-7 hours per wheel later the above is the result.
Several hours per wheel sounds about right. Did you get any pictures taken of yourself while doing the work??? You end up looking like you are covered in dark greyish black makeup...and the sh!t is about as hard to get off as makeup...not that I wear makeup Just a messy job and PITA, but the results are so worth it. You did great on those!

I got pics of the wheels as they went through the different grits of sandpaper and intervals of polish, but no pics of me. It was nasty, but I like seeing that blackness when I'm polishing. That tells me it's working and that whatever I'm polishing will shine when I finish. It was a pita though...the sanding was the worst for me. It seemed like it was never ending because I would start with a lower grit and do all 4 wheels, then move to the next grit up and do it all over again. It felt like after hours and hours I had nothing to show for all the work...until the big payoff at the end.

I didn't clear coat them when I finished. Do you think I should, or just re-polish every now and again?

I didn't think you could clearcoat a true polish job....I know you can "powder-clear", but not sure about actual paint clear. Me...I'd leave them. Once you have them to the level you have them at, they are always just a simple 5-minute hand-polish job away with some Mothers Aluminum Polish. I just brought an old polished TRX out of the attic yesterday for a show sign stand. It was hazed over and felt like it had overspray on it when I rubbed it out. The shine came back in just minutes and felt smooth as glass.

I know the feeling...this was my first polish project back in the 90's

I actually think it would be awesome if we could get an FEP/Saleen group together and all show up for that open house they do. How cool would it be to get a bunch of four eyed Saleens together at Saleen?
That would be awesome. Lets plan it out soon.

Thanks guys. Fascat, having a four eyed Saleen has been my dream fox ever since I was a young kid. While I didn't imagine this one would need so much work and literally fight me on everything, whenever I peek at it in the garage it makes me happy. One day I hope to own a show quality, low mile 85 or 86 Saleen and a nice driver quality aero. I just can't get enough of them.

    Thanks again guys!
