Thread: Tuning question

    Default Tuning question

Just picked up an 86 SVO and have a few things I have questions about. Let me preface by listing current mods. The car has a ported upper and lower intake, ported exhaust manifold, boport 1.9 cam, t3 converted t4 turbo. Everything Else down to the air box is stock. This thing idles fine but seems to fall on It's face with any Kind of hard acceleration. I know I have a long road ahead of me but just need to know where to start. Timing? Fuel delivery, air delivery? Do I need a megasquirt/P.I.M.P. system and injectors with these mods or can I make it work with stock stuff?

You can make it work with a stock computer if you have it tuned.

I can't imagine the stock airbox much likes the larger turbo and cam but it should just fall flat. Should pull and then lean out. The computer most likely will yank a bunch of timing and it will slow way down.

Could he be sucking the rubber hose between the airbox and the turbo inlet closed under acceleration?

I've fought a soggy top end in one way or another since I first did the turbo swap on my car. Every thing I've done has improved it, the latest was writing off the stock fuel injectors and buying a new set (aftermarket). Back when my PIP/TFI were bad, the car ran and drove but lacked performance. Had a similar issue before the first T3 finally puked. Also ran considerably better after rebuilding the engine. I guess my point is that many things can cause a lack of performance. You can check the computer for error codes, you can do visual inspections, and you can randomly throw parts at the problem. Eventually you might strike gold. There are just too many potential causes to really address them all.

If you can get a fuel pressure gauge, install it and have some one watch it while you drive. Give you an idea if it's a fuel problem or if its something else. I've had multiple problems over the years and once I can figure out if it is fuel/spark/air makes it easier to find and fix.
