    Default Speedometer restoration

My 85 Saleen has a quirky speedometer. It makes a noise, a metallic ding-ding type sound, as the broken off needle bounces all over the place. I also have a Ford 140 mph unit that needs some attention as well.

The cable was replaced not long ago.

Who repairs speedometers for fox Mustangs?

Did you grease the speedometer cable? The inner part slide out the housing. I know there is speedometer cable grease made for this. Anyone know?

I can't remember what I did. I do believe I did put something on there, possibly a white grease.

Sounds like that should have worked. So you saying both speedometer are doing the same thing? What's the one thing in common?

I had a bouncing speedo needle and a little white lithium grease spray sorted that out. I also painted all my needles and now they look new. The only problem I have is the Saleen speedo and tach decals look old, but it seems none have faired very well over time. Even the hella low mileage garage kept cars show some signs of bubbling (not all of them, but some) when it comes to those decals.

Those are the only things I know about when it comes to speedo refreshing or fixing.
    Cheers!

Same hear, do happen to have a graphite like substance at the back of your speedometer? This could be a bad indication the Speedo is done.

Both speedos do different things. I've never run the Motorsport 140 in the Saleen. I do have some seasoned cables lying around here, I may stick one in just to totally rule out the cable.

I'm sure I've sprayed lube down the cable from the top.

Sucks nobody has a speedo repairing business specializing in four-eyeds.

There is really not too much to them. You should be able to do a tear down of one. I have taken them apart before to change the mileage from when I went to my factory 85MPH to 140MPH. Also not sure if lube is enough, needs to be speedometer grease or close. I know they called for speedometer cable grease when I bought mine. It bounced like hell without it.

    Good call.

I'll pull one of my 85 mph ones apart and see whats inside. Then, I'll at least know what goes on in a functioning one.

I don't want to kill a 1 of 129 85 Saleen speedo, thats why I was looking for a pro.

Back in the 90's, I was told that a shop called Stanton Speedo, was the shop that Saleen used, to modify the speedometers in the Saleen Mustangs originally. I know that they were located in California.

I don't know if they are still in business now or not.

This was told to me by a Saleen employee, at the time.

How's Santa Maria nowadays? I was stationed at Vandenberg in 95. Loved the whole area back then. I bought my 83 in Atascadero if I remember correctly.

Do yourself a favor and stay there, not much going on here LOL. Cool I remember all the clean old school cars and shows. Very nice time there.

It was around the time you were here, in the USAF, that I was looking to go to school in LA.

The scene died out for awhile, but is really strong today. There are 2 donut-type deals locally, one on saturday and one on sunday. The late night scene is strong as it was back in the early 2000's again, or so I've heard....

I'm planning to make a trip out that way, after I retire, to go back where my career got it's start. I really loved that whole area.
