Default 85 2.3 fouling plugs and black smoke

Hi everyone! New on here and this is my first post.
My son and I are trying to get his 85 2.3 up and running. I used to drive the car but parked it about three years ago when I bought my truck. The car ran fine then. To get it road ready I have replaced the plugs, wires, rotor button and distributed cap. We also put in fresh gas. The problem is it won't idle, fouls the plugs and produces black smoke. I'm scratching my head here folks! Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Robbie

Are the plugs oil fouled or fuel fouled?

If it's fuel fouled, it's your carberator, probably dried up gaskets and stuck fuel float causing engine to flood or run too rich. I would rebuild carb or by new or remanufactured carberator. Remanufactured saves time and money, probably really cheap too.

The plugs are fuel fouled and there is black soot on the ground under the tail pipe.

Yeah I would say the carb is probably gummed up and just needs rebuild. Be sure before that, check all your vacuum lines for dry cracked leaks or air sounds. The car has been parked a long time.

Man, that's easier said than done! You should see all of the blocked off lines!

LOL, vacuum leaks can cause bad idle, possibly the problem. Critters sure love chewing on parked cars....

You can pull the fault codes on the ALD port just like any On Board Diagnostic 1 pre 1996 EECIV Ford. Don't do a thing till you have! The alien screw that controls idle needs to be left alone and the codes pulled like its an injection car.

CARTER YFA fuel solenoid is usually the problem, but the cause is the crap gets in this seamingly simple 1-bbl carb after a diet of stale fuel and sitting not going anywhere. The carb to manifold bolts always leak air and need torquing down with a new gasket to 12 to 15 ft lbs or 13.5 ft lbs to be exact, and red loctite put on the threads.

There is a TPS and a whole range of special devices.

For most, an exchange carby fixes the problems if the codes show a fault with it.

Not sure but you could contact these guys and ask about more specs...?

    Thanks for those other links!
Once you've pulled the codes, you'll know the next step. If your keen to clean and rebuild, follow these. Just log the turns and the length of the idle adjustments, don't change them.

Those guys at Guaranteed Carb are great! Nice price and plug and play. I tried to rebuild that YFA with no luck.

One other thing to consider doing is getting that TFI module off the dizzy and into a heat sink kit......I burned up 3 of those things until I got the relocate kit.....
