    Default How is this tool supposed to be used?

    I've been putting off changing my belts because I will have to do it solo (as usual). I decided to look and see if there was some kind of tool that would help a bit. I came up with this:

    It's well recommended and not very expensive, but I can't for the life of me work out how it is actually used. I've looked everywhere and there's no info at all in this regard. Has anyone ever used it that can give me a clue?

    ive seen similar ones, not bent, but offset, but they looked much better then that, they are used for the spring tensioner

    I don't believe it works on modern tensioner's, it's old school and hooks around the alternator or other accessory, then you put a ratchet in the hole and apply tension to the fan belt while tightening the adjustment bolt.

    That explains what the end with he hole does, but where does the pointy bit go?

    it's basically a hook and it will hook onto something, there's probably not a specific spot

    Default Lisle 12400- fan belt tensioner tool

    For some reason, pics of the Lisle tool 12400 package with instructions are few and far between.
    Same for the same tool under other brand names.

    Here is a link to one in the package. It is intended for reference only and not to indorse anyone or any site.

    Have used the tool regularly for many years tightening v-belts.
    It is a safe and quick way to do this job.
    Practice for best leverage positioning and overall procedure.

    This is a 2 handed job.
    Get 3 tools ready;
    One 1/2 ratchet handle for the tool; Tool attaches to the socket drive fitting.
    One tool for the pivot bolt. Use socket or wrench;
    One tool for the ear bolt. Use socket or wrench.

    First, both alt bkt pivot bolt and alt ear bolt need to be backed off about 1/4 to 1/2 turn from tight.

    Set ratchet direction to pull on the hook. Position tool and tighten belts. Hold this combo tool steady and upright.
    Keep pressure on ratchet handle with one hand while tightening alt ear bolt with the other.
    This should be enough to hold belt tension for now.
    Next, tighten alt bracket pivot bolt.
    Final check belt tension and bolt tensions. Redo if needed.
    Done.

    I recently bought a 12400 at a swap meet for $4 as per gr79's recommendation in another thread and got an chance to use it when my alternator died on my Fairmont. That thing works like a charm.

    I see...

    I think I've got a good picture of this now. It was basically the orientation of the tool that had me flummoxed.
