Default Brought this home yesterday - 1979 Mustang Cobra

It's black with green. V8 auto 60k miles Car is original and the paint is very faded along with the cobra decal. Interior is very good. TRX wheels and tires came with the car. It will be a long term project. Right now just want to get the brakes fixed and tagged.

Can you explain what the "alternate" package is? I had never heard of that until now.

Cobra Package Alternate - available only with black exterior paint and interior trim, includes green exterior accents in place of standard red.

It was available only in 1979. According to Marti Auto, there were 938 made.

That's an amazing cobra, one of the best color combos offered...congrats! I'm glad it's in your hands cause with the terrible wheels, big louvers (as opposed to the correct 12-slat), and snake emblems on the fenders this car was going down a dark path. I know it will be put right now that it's yours.

Wasn't the word alternate used because black on black cars usually got red accents and the green was the "alternate" color to that? I thought that's why it was called alternate?

    What's the plan?
    Cheers!

Thanks Mike. Honestly I had never heard the term cobra alternate until today. I think you are correct though. I just always liked the black with green cobras and started looking for one.
The guy I bought it from put the louvers on it. The original owner put the cobra emblems on it and the wheels that are on it now. However, she saved the original TRX wheels and tires. The tires have very little wear on them and the seller included them with the car. I want the louvers and cobra emblems removed. Brakes need to be fixed before I can really drive the car anywhere. After that I want to see if the paint can be buffed out. Also, need to look for a few parts like the fan shroud, correct air filter - have the air cleaner and I am sure there is more parts missing. If the paint still looks bad after buffing I might have it painted and get new graphics eventually. I am honestly undecided on this. Part of me just wants to leave it the way it is now. Part of me wants to restore it correctly to show in MCA concours division. For now, I really just want to drive it occasionally to club cruises etc.

You don't find them that clean around here. Heck hard to find a 99 that clean.

Yours would be my second favorite color package. My 1st would be an dark jade with green stripes. I had one, but it was shot. I really should have found a donor to make it something, but instead I found another cobra owner in need and sold it to him.
