I have a set of 28 spline mosers with the c clip eleminator but havent inistalled them yet

I think you will have to change the complete center section

dont you need special outer bearings to fit the larger diameter axles?

idk I bought the c clip eleminator's for it. I have the moser 28 spline axels now waiting to go in. If I could upgrade to the 31 with just a spider gear change I would have done that. The more I think abopout it the more incline to replacing the spool and doing the 31 splinedd axels anyways and just send back the 28's

i have never done the swap, but it goes without saying the 31 spline axle is a larger diameter then the 28 spline, so if the bearings in the axle housing ends fit the 28, how would the 31 fit inside the I.D. of the bearing. i know i had a ranger 8.8 and an explorer 8.8 and the actual housing tubes were bigger on the explorer, buy about 1/2 diameter if i remember correctly

I don't believe that the shaft diameters are different.

well i may be ignorant with this, but if they are the same diameters, then where does the increased strength come from? lets say a 1.5 inch round stock axle, cut with 28 splines, and a 1.5 inch round stock with 31 splines cut, at the end of the day, its the same strength because its the same exact axle round stock but just different teeth at the end, if anything given the axles are the same diameter, the 31 spline would be weaker since it would have more smaller splines then the 28 axle

more splines are stronger because they require a bigger diameter axle , the 28's step down to a smaller diameter after the bearing, I'm assuming the 31's should be closer to the same diameter as the bearing surface(bigger) from end to end.

You are correct. The bearing surface(out by the wheels) is the same size 28 and 31 spline, I think it is 1.4". The axle gets smaller as it gets closer to the center of the axle on the 28 spline axles. 31 spline axles are close to the size at the bearing size for the full length.

yea after i posted i read up on it, my knowledge between the two is from a ford ranger 4x4 where everyone swaps the entire explorer axle in so you can get the beefier axle housing, bigger end bearings and disc brakes, the explorer has bigger axle housing tubes so the bearings at the wheel side are bigger and stronger, so i never realized the 27 spline axle bottle necks near the carrier. thanks for the info guys, that kinda makes me want to kick myself for scrapping my explorer axle

I was thinking of the bearing surface when I said they were the same diameter too. I knew there weren't different bearings for the 31 splines.
