    Default Mileage on 84 5.0

I'm curious what kind of mileage do most 5.0 Foxbody's get?

    I have an 84 convertible. I have done the following to it;

    MSG super conductor wire set
    Motorcraft platinum plugs
    Accel ignition coil
    Standard cap and rotor
repaired and replaced thermatic system components
    new ECM
upgraded charging system from 1G to 3G
    new distributor
    new TFI module (motorcraft)
    new fuel filter
    new air filter (fram)
all the sensors have been replaced. All of the pigtails and connectors have been replaced.

    I get 12 MPG highway.

Has to be something to tweak this and get a little more miles

The only thing I can think of is to put a K&N air filter and maybe an MSG cap and rotor.

whats the MPG on your Foxbody?

some where 15-17 city, and 20-24 highway ?

your tires pressure, get it alignment , rotation... mabe get your carb tune ? is your exhaust smell rich ( bad ) ?

WAIT, I just reread your thread, " 12 MPG highway " I though that was for local, but I do take a look at your carb again.

what you think your local miles be ? if you get 12mpg on highway, by the way pull the oil dipstick and smell it, see any fuel smell or you see the oil level is abnormal.

ECM and TFI - so if this thing is stock, it's a CFI car with an AOD. Something is definitely wrong if it's only 12 mpg on the highway. Is the car stock? I had a 90 GT convertible with an AOD and 4.10 gears in it, and it got a little over 20 mpg on the highway.

I get about 18-19 on the highway with an 84 5.0 4bbl and 5 speed. My 85 5.0 CFI auto used to get a little over 20.

MY 85 CFI auto gets up to 21 mpg highway and mixed traffic I get 15-17 mpg. The car has 130K miles on it and I drive it 1200-3000 miles per year. Its hard to get just highway driving around here as the highways back up. I just got the trans serviced and the MPG seems more consistant.

85 4V 302, Edelbrock Performer intake, Trickflow heads, everything else still there.

I get 11-12 mpg driving locally. On the drive home from Ford Nationals at Carlisle, I got around 25.

I think most of the gas goes to heating up the engine when I'm driving locally.

I have 4 brand new Cooper tires and all 4 are correct pressure, tires are barely broken in.
I have a CFI so theres no carb to tune or rebuild. Im not running rich, although I was before I corrected all the codes my ECM was pulling. I used to get much worse MPG before I cleared the codes. The only one left is code 18 in CM which is a resistor I have to change but that cant be such a negative impact.

I drove my '91 GT convertible from SoCal to Vegas once, had two friends with me, did 70 MPH the whole way, and got something like 320 miles on one tank. Not sure what the size of the tank was, so not certain on MPG. It was the furthest I ever brought that car on one tank though.

An 84 should have a 15.4 gallon tank in it, something isn't right there.

Could the tank have been replaced with a older year, smaller tank?

That would seem odd because it isn't a direct swap and none of the cars with smaller tanks as far as I know were fuel injected. Something is really weird here.

Not sure I understand how tank size would affect miles-per-gallon, but I'm with Travis, it's a moot point.

Yeah it's just kind of a side story that sounds odd. I'd like to see a picture of the tank.
