What's making you want to ditch the 3.73's? Either stock gear ratio is going to feel pretty weak off the line compared to your current set up. I had 2.73's in my old 86 and it was a dog off the line. My 85 has 3.08's, but they aren't much better. You will be able to go 80-85 on the highway and not go over around 2500 rpm though. Personally I like the kick of the higher gears, but 3.73's might be too much for a street car everyday .
    Cheers!

You can show the notch. If you just want to post pics and tell us about it than post in the "General BS" section. If you have a tech question for the notch you can post that in the "non-FEP Related Tech" section. We just want to keep the other tech forums for four eyed questions, but we all love aero Mustangs too (and gen 1, and Mustang II's, and SN95's, 197's, etc).

In answer to your question, most of the big Mustang retailers sell gears (Latemodel, CJ, NPD, Summit, Jegs, etc). I'm sure somebody will have 3.08's...Unless you want original 85 parts? If so, you will have to look at eBay and such. I don't know if Ford still sells Motorcraft replacement gears or not? My guess is probably not.

***Edit: ok, so I just looked around and you're right, finding a place that sells 3.08's for the 7.5 rear end isn't as easy as I thought. I can find 3.08's, but they are for 8.8" rear ends. Maybe you will have to go used and find someone with a stock set? A ton of people upgrade to the 8.8, so I'm sure many have their old 7.5" rear ends lying around. Post a parts wanted ad here in the classifieds.

***Double Edit-here's one from eBay that I found:

you sure you have 3.73s and not 4.10s or 430s…that sounds like a lot of RPMs for just 60-65…I have Ford 3.73s in my 86 and my revs are no where near that RPM range at 60-65….im just a little over 2k-2200 maybe. Did they change the gear on the speedo cable?

I originally had a 3.08 gear in the ole 82 GT I had back in the day. When the factory 7.5 spider gears came apart I put a 8.8 unit under it with factory a 3.08 gear set. Later, this was changed to a 3.55 gear and I liked it for what it was...some track time and lots of highway miles back and forth to college...600 miles one way. The 85 GT I have now has a factory 8.8 under it with a 3.27 gear that came out of an auto D.P.S. unit. I really like this gear set with the 5 speed and think it is the best of both worlds, even though it is just a weekend toy.

I might incorrect on the rmp, I think 55-60 was little bit under 2k or just 2k, and 70-75 was 3k, some where like that, and also I dont like it because it make me shift out first gear too fast.

I don't know about the V6 thing? Maybe you should message the seller and ask? Have you tried a local parts store to see what they have? Maybe go to your local ford parts counter and see if they sell service replacements? Otherwise you will have to find a good used original.
    Cheers!

Or maybe it's time to upgrade to an 8.8" rear end? The 7.5" is pretty weak anyway, I'm surprised those 3.73's didn't tear up the 7.5 in the first place, if I'm honest.
    Cheers!

Consider the 3.27 gear. I've found it to be a good compromise on my "85.

I won't argue with you about wanting to change out the 3.73s, there are days when I wish I hadn't gone
with the 3.55s in my hatch. But I don't know that I would go all the way back to 3.08s either. I agree
with bwguardian and 8ball, 3.27s are about a perfect ratio for a fun street driver. I've got 3.25s in both
my '67 and my '68 and love them. 3.45s wouldn't be a bad choice either.

I might argue with you wanting to stay with the 7.5, but the '85 is a light car, and there are still plenty of
'85 GTs running around quite happily with 7.5s under them. It's just that an 8.8 with the ratio you want
would be cheaper and easier to install, and you'd have a lot more to choose from.

But if you don't mind using aftermarket gears, you've still got lots of choices for the 7.5, from 3.08 on up,
from companies like Motive and Yukon. Or you can try searching around for NOS Ford Motorsport sets.
    M-4209-L308, M-4209-L327, or M-4209-L345.
