Default Armrest clip mounting holes worn out. Welding?

I'm still pulling my armrests out of the doors with little effort, even though I have new clips. Is there anything that would be damaged by a quick current spike from a tack weld? I know to pull the battery to make sure the computer is offline. I'm just not sure about the wiring and electric motors.

Take the clips and you can open them up a little so they stay in the doors better. Did it to my svo.......worked great

I tried that with the old clips and broke two. They were almost 30 years old though.

Really? Wow....i guess you could spot weld them in. Just be careful. Dont burn your door lock wires. Or you could prob get new clips from FMR.

Spreading the clips apart carefully can help many times with a loose fitting clip. Also make sure that the square hole that the clips snap into isn't worn or even cracked. I have seen the sheet metal crack on the edges when some yanks too hard on the armrest and pops the clips out. If the hole is damaged or worn you will need to correct that in order for the original or new clips to hold well. If worn a bit then many times spreading the clips out will help them fit in the larger opening and work fine. If you have a crack, then you will want to weld that up to prevent further damage to the opening and help keep the clip installed.

You can also tack/spot weld the clips into the door openings, but I generally only recommend that as a last resort when all other options have failed.

    Good Luck!

Make sure to protect the window from welding slag (ie - put the window in the up position)....

Absolutely! I should have mentioned that. I still like to cover it with either a welding blanket or cardboard or something too just to be safe. Rather have to put out a cardboard fire, then replace a door glass.

Lol, thanks guys. I tacked them in place. The holes were just too worn to compensate for. All I need is a radio delete plate, and this will be the first time this car has had a complete interior in many years!

    Here is one option: http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...o-Delete-Plate

    Here's another: http://www.performancepartsinc.com/interior_79_93.html

The last one is an OEM 85/86 Ford piece that is near the bottom of the page.

I know it's an old thread but I have a simple suggestion that works well.

Mine broke a long time ago before there was widely used Internet, etc. very different time!

my solution was correctly sized toggle bolts. Ones correctly sized and cut to length but just like these
    https://www.nutsandbolts.com/toggle-...50-p-6189.html

works like a champ. The clips fall when I take the door panel off but they are easy to grab and prep for reinstallation. I've only ever had one break so they are plenty strong enough. Works around mild breaks in the doors too
