Default My 85 SVO came with a supertrapp on the tailpipe.

I have yet to hear it run and I was considering buying the new baffle and other components to rebuild it.
The stainless body is fine but the baffling is coming apart, is it worth even messing with?
The car has 1 2.5" to the back that goes thru what appears to be a big catalytic convertor and then to this Supertrapp.
I know its old school, but so is the car.

Really? Lol. I would be curious to hear what it would sound like.prob sound like a honda ex 400. Diffrent. Polish that thing chrome, make it look cool. I would prob keep it just to hear it. Lol

I looked on the Supertrapp web site and the components are pretty pricey.
Not sure if the Cat is gutted or not.
Im assuming its a cat but it is really pretty large.

They were all the rage back in the 80s... mostly on imports and motorcycles... but a few were seen on some V8s too. They don't make as much HP as a Flowmaster type muffler. Period correct Nostalgia is there, but street cred is not. They are associated with a different crowd. It will probably get more snickers than grins today.

Gee I wounder what crowd he's referring to?
I'm open to suggestions, but we are talking about a 4 cylinder motor turbo or not.

My choice would be something from Stinger

Among lots of other cool SVO parts, scroll down for the exhaust systems.

I think the primary feature is you can remove the baffles at the track.

Other than that, I never saw much use for them.

I don't know that I would use the sound from the video above as a decision maker myself.

I used and still currently own a pair of Supertrapps that I installed on my 92 F150 Flareside back in the mid 90's. I agree that they didn't have the same low rumble of Flowmasters, but they did sound good IMHO. They do have more of a Import Motorcycle tone, but it varies with what they are installed on.

The big "Advantage" back in the day was the adjust ability of the mufflers. As you add discs the end of the pipe the muffler is less restrictive and as stated you could essentially "uncork" them by removing the discs and the end cap entirely for open exhaust at the track.

I am not sure how the Supertrapp looks on a SVO, but if you like the look, then I would say go for it. If you do have a functioning Catalytic Converter on the SVO, you most likely won't need much "muffler" to keep the exhaust tone down.

    Good Luck!

I had a friend that used to build turbos and autocross an SVO back in the 90s and he had one on his car. It was dead quiet. I never liked the look of them myself though.

I could remove the cat and install a new muffler where the cat is now right?
Is this a standard practice and if so what dimension muffler will fit in its place.
Will removing the cat cause any drive-ability issues?

Removing the cat will cause no issues. I guess you might be able to install a muffler in its place but usually the muffler(s) go just in front of the rear axle. The stock cat was just after the downpipe.

I am not an exhaust gas expert, but my understanding is that the mufflers work better when the exhaust gases have had a chance to cool down some. That is part of the reason most mufflers are placed at the back of the vehicle.

If you do choose to remove the cat, I would just install a delete pipe or straight section of pipe in place of the cat and you will be fine. Assuming you don't have emissions testing in your area.

Straight through design is best on the turbo. Magnaflow sounds great. Here is a video of my old SVO with no cat and dual Magnaflows

Sounds good! Is the dual tailpipe and option they had for the SVO?

Brad, Are you talking about the Supertrapp of the Cat?

The Supertrapp. I do understand why people put cats on. Because the law says they have to.

SVOs came stock with dual exhaust from 85 1/2 to 86.
