    Default 2014 Fall Foliage cruise

I think it's time we start thinking about the fall cruise now that it's almost September! For those not familiar with this we usually meet up on the second Sunday in October somewhere in my neck of the woods (eastern NH lakes region) for breakfast then head out on back roads up through the white mountains for a relaxed cruise. Last year was a little interesting with a few detours and some off-roading so I was thinking of perhaps doing the route we did the year before. Meet up at my place, have some breakfast, and head out rt153 up to Conway, hit the kanc, and maybe either go through Lincoln to 93 or do the bear notch road again into Bartlett then back down into Conway.

I no longer have family (besides my wife and daughter of course) living in my house so I'm open to hosting breakfast like I have in the past. And there are a few diners not far from here also. This is a family event so significant others and kids are more than welcome. I always bring my wife and daughter on this one. I also spoke to a few people at Chet-B's Car-B-Q this year about the cruise so we may have some non 4-eye's this year too. Perhaps even a real 65-66 Shelby. And if a friend of mine gets his act together a 66 Shelby clone. Last year we even permitted a hyundai rental when futuraguy blew up his transmission on the way here.

I've already blocked out a couple of vacation days (Friday and Monday) around that weekend and am planning the annual trip to NH to visit family, friends, in-laws, outlaws, etc. So count me in for the cruise.

I'm happy to report the Futura is running as sweet as can be. Today I drove it from here to Lebanon Valley Dragway and back for Musclepalooza without the least bit of trouble. Maybe I can break "The Curse of the New Hampshire Border" (failed master cylinder in 2010 and the transmission last year).

Do I need a mustang or does a 60 fairlane count as acceptable?

I think a '60 Fairlane would be cool. After all, I'm the guy who was "forced" to take a Hyundai last year.

When I was a kid I lived across the street from a Catholic church in Manchester (NH). One of the priests had a 2-door 1960 Ford Custom with black wall tires and dog dish hubcaps but it was running a 352 HiPo with 3-speed and overdrive. It had 10.6 to 1 compression, solid lifters, a hot cam, and put out something like 360 horsepower. The priest told me he could get 120 miles per hour in second with the overdrive.

A fairlane would be cool. We might even have a non-ford in attendance due to it's owner having an ailing 4 eye. But we did roll with a Hyundai last year... And I'll bet Rock was a whole lot less concerned with his undercarriage on our little off-road jaunt than the rest of us were.

That's the plan - Columbus Day weekend. I've blocked out vacation days for Friday the 10th and Monday the 13th.

Last year when I had the rented Hyundai, I didn't worry about damaging the undercarriage when we went "off-roading", although I didn't tell the rental agency where we'd been until AFTER they checked the car and didn't find any damage. Hopefully this year we stay on dry pavement.

I think Columbus day weekend seems to be the tradition. I'm thinking of the route we ran 2 years ago. 153 to the kanc, then bear notch road to avoid the craft fair in Lincoln. Or we could just take the Kanc all the way through and break off at 93.

We would like to, but mechanical issues and October schedule this year mean we will have to pass on it.

One more week! What do you guys want to do for a meet-up breakfast spot? My house, local diner up the street? I could probably get my house in some semblance of order by then. Menu would likely be limited to pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, OJ, Coffee and would be relatively self-serve. Or the miss wakefield diner is a couple miles up RT 16 from my house. No idea how busy they would be though. Last year we met up at the Tilton diner and the place was packed.

Either the diner or your house as a meet-up spot works for me. I'll be staying in Laconia on Saturday night and will take Routes 25 and 109 to your place unless you can suggest a better route. Also, I might be taking the '72 Mustang instead of the Futura - long, sad story.

Depending on what side of Laconia it might be quicker to go the other way around the lake. rt 11 to 28 to 109. But if closer to the Meredith side 25 to 109 would be fastest probably. Sorry to hear the Futura may not make it. But if it's questionable best to run one you trust.

Good things come to those who wait......and wait. Seriously, after finding a couple of exposed chafed wires last Saturday, I didn't want to star in Act III of "The Curse of the New Hampshire Border."

If Smokin' Stangs has a meet next year in New Hampshire, I may drive it up even though it's not a Mustang. I don't think they'll throw me out.
