Any chance it could be the human factor? Ideally these decals should be peel and stick because they are put onto the paper straight and with the proper gaps, but that doesn't always happen. I've had to cut some decals and line up the seperate words by hand because they weren't printed correctly. Maybe I should have returned the decals I had to do that with, but I was in a hurry for results (lol).
Just a thought?
Cheers!

On another note, the reproduction has the small letters in orange like the inside of the big letters, and the original looks to be the red as in the outline of the big letters.

Hard to tell from the different angles, but the fonts look off in size too, but that may just be the angle.
The Date should definitely be in red. I know since I just replaced my missing R on my Pace CA . . . to make it a PACE CAR again!

The letters in "Official Pace Car" look thicker on the reproductions as well.

Bottom pic.. Did you notice the butt of the "R" isn't outlined properly? I'd say that is not factory either. The default setting in coreldraw clips corners like that. I own a sign shop and I'm there 28+ days a month. I'd never let that out the door. The factory example in post 6 has a properly drawn outline. One of them is wrong. here..
which R did you get? of the three i drew, which one is correct? the pics in the background were both "factory" according to the pics posted in this thread. i would guess the first one i drew with rounded corners is the right way. just a guess though.
i made the outlines thicker to exaggerate the butt of the R
the reason the font is thicker in the reproductions is because it looks like they used a new eurostyle font instead of what ever existed in 1978. i had the same problem just now. they all look too thick or too thin. it's a chore matching stuff like this. i go nuts with it.
Just curious.. Are the left and right side decals on an original car both exactly the same? Or is the text left justified on one side, right justified on the other? 90% of the cars I design have significant changes from one side to the other.

My R was off an OEM left over Decal sheet, but I will have to look at it in the daylight to verify exactly which way it looks. I believe it's the last one, but again I will have to grab a photo in the daylight.
I believe the spacing is pretty even side to side. The Passenger side has the OFF of Official on the rear quarter so the # of letters is the same and I don't recall there being any immediately noticeable differences in the spacing, but I have never measured it or been able to compare the two side decals side by side for sure.

Good info. I have noticed inconsistencies as well. I have ford decals, but I worry about the day I paint the car and can't find another set of factory decals.

I had this problem when installing my Phoenix kit. I had to cut the the decal apart and tighten up the spaces to have it fit between the door jamb and wheel well, It was not the worst. It definitely is a nice kit but their is always room for improvement. I do not have a good picture, this is the best I could find.

I still have the original Ford factory "Official Pace Car" decals on their sheet. I would really like to get them on the car. I pealed one back slightly and it was pretty dry. Any suggestions on how to make sure they stick ? Also the other issue ,the decals that are on the pacecar are of course somewhat faded after 30 plus years. Should I remove everything ? Would Phoneix graphics make everything but the "Official Pace Car " ? Any comments or suggestion would be great .

Hi there that is a good question. I would email Nathan Shipe. He is the Sales Director, that is who I contacted. Maybe they can hook you up.

I think if you're talking factory original decals then you probably should just order a whole new set. After 30+ years of storage those original decals have to be toast. I suppose you could try and spray them with some type of adhesive and install them and see what happens, but my guess is that isn't the best way to do things. Although if it doesn't work all you wasted was a few bucks on adhesive (as long as it doesn't damage your paint and can be removed easily), as opposed to the cost involved in buying a complete decal kit.
Cheers!

I put 30 year old NOS decals on my v8 Pace and they went on just fine. I have experience with auto refinishing as well as graphic design and printing so I know how to handle this well but I had no problem removing it from the backing or installing the graphic. I did use a spritzer bottle with water and a touch of dish detergent for lube. It has remained on there for 5 years now without lifting. So it can be done, but the NOS decal has to be well kept on a parts shelf in the original box. Most of the decals you find for sale were kept by the new car customer when not installed. Those are not really NOS and no telling how they have been stored or handled over the years. These graphics were made of highest quality and if they were kept flat, cool and dry in the original box they should still be usable.
