My package with the intercooler pipe for the hot side finally showed up so here is the first very ruff mock up. I realized that the hot side was going to have to go the top inlet of the intercooler instead of the bottom inlet.

The cold side pipe will be on the bottom allowing me to use a "S" bend pipe to off set the cold from the hot pipe and to get me closer to the throttle body.

Well my other 2 bends showed up and we flipped the one end tank. When you do this you will have to cut the inlet nipple itself off. In its place you will cut and weld the cast aluminum elbow on so that its angled up at about a 45* angle.

This pic shows ruffly how much of the elbow you will be using. However the orientation of the elbow and end tank is WRONG in this pic.

These two pics are taken from the inside of the engine bay looking towards the passenger side with the a/c condenser on your left. Here you can see the angle of the 90* elbow and the 6" peace of straight pipe I welded on the end.

Ok so I got the core completely mounted with brackets upfront, then took the core, brackets, and all the pipes to the welder for a final weld. With that all out of the way dad and I stuck the rubber mounts minus the brackets back on the condenser. The lower rubbers still had the nipples going straight down so we drilled holes in the core support for them to lock into. I managed to fab one of the two new upper brackets before we called it a night.

Dad and I got the tubes bead rolled, the three bungs welded in, and the lower radiator brackets made.

We still need to mount the fan, fab one upper radiator bracket, wire up the fan relay, and put it all back together..... 5 days left before the show.

So here we are punching the holes I need to weld the senor bungs and bypass pipe vent in. If your building this system you can skip this step for the bungs but not the bypass.

Remember that 6" peace of 1"od aluminum pipe you need to make a 45* cut on it so you can make it look like this.

Now because when I ordered my radiator I missed the inlet and outlet nipple sizes as being wrong so those had to be cut off and the new 1 1/4" inlet and 1 1/2" outlet welded on. We also added the drain plug we got from rondavisradiators.com.

    SAM_0656 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0657 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0658 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

From there we tapped some foam rubber to the bottom of the radiator end tanks this aloud us to make patterns and then the actual metal saddle brackets.

    SAM_0659 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0660 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0663 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Once this part of the brackets were made we tried to set the radiator in the car only to realize that tab I had bent down on the original radiator bracket had to be cut off. So out came the sawzall.

    SAM_0661 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Using the wood blocks we were able set our height for the radiator so we could shape the second part of the radiator support brackets.

With everything more or less built it we had to bead roll all the pipe ends that didn't already have one. I think we had to do six total rolls. To do this we went up to my uncles street rod shop called Extreme Metal and Paint to use his VERY expensive Lazze Bead roller. Needless to say some of the pipes like the one attached to the 90* elbow on the intercooler was very interesting to roll because we had to spin the entire core around the pipes axis. I took pic of this mess but my phone ate them so I'm sorry guys!

Now onto the part where I prime and paint everything!

Take note of the clamp placement, the big zip tie, and how close the condenser is. The zip is to keep the upper pipe from bouncing around a lot.

Everything just clears the lower hose.

    SAM_0714 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

For the upper hose I bought a new model year correct hose from Shucks and cut about 3" off of the thermostat side and about 1" off the radiator side.

So now that I have been driving this for a while I can report a few things. First is in my around town mpg went up 2mpg. Second sometimes when I am pulling 7-10 psi if boost in 5th gear on the freeway like ya would to pass someone, when I let off the throttle the car shudders. Its almost like the bypass valve is not able to vent the boost fast enough maybe. Makes me wish I had stepped up to a bigger one or a blow off valve. Thirdly at 15 psi I don't get the kick in the pants feeling I once did. But at 17psi I can feel it, but still can't support that much boost it feels like it either pulling timing or blowing the fire out. Gapping the plugs down to .032 helped but I think I'll try em at .028. If that doesn't fix it I will have to get my afr gauge set up to make sure im still ok.

On my car when I went to the Stinger FMIC from the non-intercooled 86 TC setup, I picked up a huge boost lag. Part of it was that my engine was just really tired, the intercooler really brought the leaky head's problems out into the daylight. After the rebuild, the lag dropped considerably. I'm running an RFL knock off BOV, cheap POS but whatever... It works ok, except I have to choose between setting it so tight that it doesn't open unless it really needs to (high rpm, high boost), or setting it so loose that at highway speeds it opens letting in unmetered air and causing problems when I let off the gas.

Has anybody thought about running a shorty radiator with intercooler in a fox...Merkur guys do it all the time and think it was OEM on a cossy...Attachment 79494

I actually tried to make that work but no one had one in stock and I didn't see where the core would get much airflow.

Back in February I got the chance to tack this set up to the track and it worked really well until the last straight away where the car started to fall on its face due to the computer puling timing. The next step is to get my AFR gauge in and see what that shows, but I think in the end the head is going to need to be pulled and checked for CC as I think its been cut to many times. If its not to bad I hope to fix that with comic head gasket of the right thickness.

My apologies to the guys who were following my threads as I have seriously neglected them due to.... life happening.

So since my last post a great deal has happened to the svo. One of the problems that plagued the driveability of my FMIC was the bosche bypass valve. Once I swapped it out for a GoFastBits unit the trailer hitching and compressor surge all went away. Now at the same time I also added and Electronic Boost controller from GFB to help with boost creep that I was getting with the gillis valve. I cover the install of these items here in this thread... http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...d-Bypass-Valve This was also a success but what I didn't realize at the time was that the motor wasn't falling on its face due to timing or plug gap. I actually had a much bigger problem in the form of excessive piston to wall clearance. The speedpro replacement pistons called for .003" clearance, the machine shop gave .005" and by 40k miles that had grown to .007". The result of this was so much blow by that when I went to boost it would send oil into the combustion chamber threw the PCV system causing the detonation that kept me from achieving high boost levels. This of course would not be discovered until I tore the motor down after it blew the dipstick out a few times. The new motor build was added to the original motor build thread starting at post #136 in this link... http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...r-Mayhem/page6

All of that being said, one last positive change the FMIC had on driveability is that the intercooler pipe in front of the Throttle Body added plenum area and aids off idle/tip in throttle response. This really makes the car a lot nicer to drive every day!
