I use a small screwdriver to help the gear in.

The gear is a tight fit with the new bushings, so a little persuasion and sometimes a rubber mallet will be your best friend.

I found steady pressure on all three dowels to be more effective than pounding on them. I put them sort of in place (inboard to shaft higher than outboard), put a deep socket that fits over the gear but not the dowels, and used a C-clamp to push them in. Piece of cake. Don't forget to replace all that grease.

I do my installs almost the same way, but I use the rubber mallet instead of C Clamp. My wife says I have pent-up anger issues!
