Default 1982 mustang gt factory race car scca showroom stock

I was wondering if anyone has any info about an 82 gt that ford raced in scca showroom stock. I purchased the car last year and the owner, who also raced the car, claimed that he purchased the car from Ford in 1985. I was told Ford pulled it off the assy line, bolted a cage in it and took it racing. It still has the cage in it. I also have the scca log book and it ran Nelson National 5-18-84,6-1-84, mid-Ohio 7-13-84, road Atlanta 5-3-85 ect. I found the original insurance card from 1982 and it says owner is Ford Motor Co. S.Drall. I purchased an eminger inv. for it and it says it was sold to Ford Motor Co. and delivered to Dearborn assy plant garage 3001 Miller Rd. Dearborn. Any info on my "barn find" would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Had a look at the Eminger invoice. See the line in the equipment/options/price list that shows the original tag number and it being for "Public Affair"? Very interesting.

The name "S.Drall" on the original registration is probably Stanley Drall. When he retired from Ford he was their Public Relations Manager. He died in 2010.

This may be it at Nelson Ledges in 1983. Who were the drivers, I can get some info if you have that. This is mostly about the svo showroom stock but this might be it. I have two showroom stock svo's from 1984.

http://www.drivingenthusiast.net/sec...al-report-svo/ Click on the svo showroom stock link and about three pages into it is a red 82 gt.

That's an amazing find, congrats! I hope you are able to dig up as much history on it as possible. I did notice the car has General XP2000 tires on it. Those are what Saleen used on some of his aero Mustangs, and they sponsored a few of his race cars.

I can't wait to see what you do with this car. It deserves a resto back to race condition. Congrats again!
    Cheers!

One way to research the car's SCCA race history could be to find some Grassroots Motorsports Magazines from that period. The car should be listed in some of the race results and maybe even some race commentary.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys, I appreciate y'alls help. Kendall, I'm posting pics of the driver's name from the logbook, appears to be David A.? Can't make out the last name, maybe you can. Also among the numerous boxes of parts I found a couple of Gates belts, never seen any like them. Posted pics, thought they were interesting, any thoughts? Thanks again for all yall's help! Thanks for the info on the tires also Mike, I guess I should stop the burnouts!!! Patrick

Name looks like it could be David A. Jewett. There was a David Jewett participating in an event in 2004 according to this: http://faculty.mansfield.edu/mhaner/Content/SCCA.html

There is probably a 90% or better chance this guy: http://mwphoto.smugmug.com/Cars/WATERFORD-HILLS has a photo or two of the car, can tell you the drivers on what weekend and may even know something about the car.

Anyone heard from Big Mo regarding the 82 GT Showroom Stock race car? What a great find...

Sorry I haven't been on in a while, suffered a few personal tragedies this past year. All is well now. Sadly I feel I must sell the mustang. I love the car and would love to restore and race her. But I've lost the storage to restore this one and I have restorations ahead of it. Plus I'm not getting any younger. This car is special and deserve someone else who will restore, preserve, and will have fun racing it back on the track. Unfortunately it does not look like I can give her the love she deserves. I really wanted to put it back on the track and vintage race her. However at this time it's not me. She deserves an owner who can afford to take care of her. I'm sure there's someone who would be proud to add her to their collection. I'll let y'all know how it goes. Thanks for all y'alls help.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Please send me a PM about specifics, I know a few SCCA guys into vintage racing.

Just curious what a ballpark figure would be if you were to sell. I may have some interest if I can line up storage for the winter.

    Now listed on EBAY.

I am curious if there is a chance of a twisted frame since it was probably driven hard and would the roll cage help more then SF connectors?

Hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread, I know this car. The name on the Log Book is David A. Smith. I crewed for him back then. The car was indeed a factory race car. Ford engineer Ron Smaldone brought the car to the 1982 Longest Day. It ran as a Prototype as it had an '83 drivetrain in it (4bbl carb and 5speed). The car was then moth-balled at Ford and I don't know when the original drivetrain was re-installed, but Dave got it for the 1984 SCCA season. I see in the ebay listing that someone claims to have bought it from Ford in 1985, so maybe Dave borrowed or leased it. The 4bbl cars were classified in the SSGT class but the 2bbl cars went down a step to SSA where Dave felt it would be relatively more competitive. He took the car to the 1984 Runoffs at Road Atlanta but if I remember correctly, a belt in a tire slipped, throwing it out of round and Dave limped it around un-competitively for the whole race.

interesting info from Tommy... makes the car much more interesting now that the history of the car is known. Would make a nice addition to Kendal's SVO race cars from the same period and races!
