Default My 82 Capri RS Resurrection and Build

Well ladies and Gentleman it been ten years since I brought this old girl home. Today on my Birthday, she finally found her way into the shop to begin the tear down of the front suspension. We will be starting with the steering rack, pump, FMS lower a-arms, koni struts, steeda springs, and steeda caster samber plates.

Thanks Guys!!! I Just wiped the camera so pictures will be very, very abundant!!

Jeff Dad is doing good. Now that we are no longer doing the BBQ He has had the time to start building his P-51 Mustang while I'm at work.
Marty and Dave, this is long over due but I finally have the cash and the time.

As for me I had to walk far, far away from the hobby for a few years. Cars had just become to big of a let down/disappointment so I got into Firearms to keep myself busy, and to grow my understanding of a feared sport. But now that the ball is rolling on the RS I might end up selling one of my bigger rifles to pay for the trans.

Ok gentleman here we go, got the car up on blocks and jack stands!

With the wheels off I removed the sway bar end links and the sway bar. The bar in question is a 89 GT bar along with the one in the rear.

Started pulling the passenger side apart, focused on the tie rods so I could drop the power steering rack.

    Nasty Fuel lines!

    SAM_0011 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Couldn't get the bottom line off the rack so we cut it. As for the line coming out of the pump well it just fell out.

Dirty underside, but not much rust for sitting out side this long.

    SAM_0015 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Fighting the bolt that hold the rack in. We would soon realize that everything had blue lock tight on it from the factory, I think this thing has never been apart.

Muh Ha Ha, finally got ya out! Not pictured is undoing the bolt that connects the steering shaft to the rack....

With the rack out we moved back to the passenger side and tore it all the way down.

Using the jack we supported the A-arm to take the pressure off the bolts holding the strut on. This also helps retain the spring while you remove the strut!
Also in this 1st picture you can see we suspended the brake caliper with some wire so I don't need to re-bleed the brakes.

Using dads ford tool and a box wrench I removed the strut.

To get the spring out we removed the jack, stood back and used a 5 foot pry bar to push the arm down till the spring fell out.

    SAM_0030 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0031 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Now getting the bolts out of the A-arm required a torch to melt the lock tight, a big cheater bar, and I explorede the dictionary.

Here you can really see the caliper lol

New Ford Racing A-arm in place but not snugged down.

    SAM_0043 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

After putting the New Ford Racing A-arm, old spindle, Koni strut in mock up we realized that there was no way to attach the dust boots to the new CC plates. About this time the little light bulb in my brain went off, "wait a minute my svo has Maximum Motorsports CC plates and they have the dust covers." So I hopped on their site and made a phone call. What I found out is they offer these http://www.maximummotorsports.com/Bu...tes-P1010.aspx bump stops. The deal is these slip over the top of the strut rod but don't fall down. The factory dust covers then attach to these! So I have set on order and they should be here Saturday afternoon!

Since I had to wait on the MM parts to show up I took the spindle and ran it through the parts washer to clean it up. After blow drying, cleaning with brake clean, blow drying again I tapped off the important areas and shot it silver.

Ha, been there and done that with my car. Didn't have as many nice aftermarket parts when I put it back together, but I did have an air compressor and a big impact wrench, thank God.

Nelson, since you're already started, why not just tear the whole enchilada down to the ground and rebuild from scratch?

In a way I am doing just that, but in stages so I don't get lost or overwhelmed.
1st up in the whole front suspension gets replaced.
2nd is swapping the 8.8 in with control arms, springs, shocks, reusing the drum brakes for now.
3rd is pull the motor and trans, inspect and rebuild or replace as needed. The plan is to rebuild the numbers matching block to 331 with AFR 165'S and mate it to a T5-Z or G-Force t5. If for some strange reason the original block is not usable, a CHP 427ci SBF might find its way under the hood, but that's a pipe dream.
4th Pull it all back apart and paint it K7 or KS7
5th Finish interior with sound system, triple gauge podded dash pad, custom covered SVO seats.

Now on to the progress we have made these last couple of weeks!

Once the MM Bump stops (part number CC-1) Showed up we were able to set about mocking up the front koni struts with the bump stops, dust covers, and the Steeda Caster Camber plates.

    Starting with a koni Strut.

    SAM_0049 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Put Dust cover on, (make sure to make the modifications I will show you in a few pics.)

    SAM_0050 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Next push the bump stop on

    SAM_0051 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Slip the steeda big bushing from the CC kit on

    SAM_0052 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Setting the CC plates on the strut to check clearances

    SAM_0053 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0054 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0055 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0056 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Once we had this all mocked up we realized that the dust boot made contact with the bolts on the bottom of the CC Plates So we cut the top part of the boot off.

    SAM_0058 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0059 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Now instead of trying to zip tie the boot to the bump stop we glued it together with contact cement.

    SAM_0060 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Here you can see the final mock up

    SAM_0061 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0063 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

As an extra layer of protection we calked the top of the bump stop to the dust boot.

    SAM_0064 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

After everything dried the CC plate was installed via the instructions and the strut was bolted in place.

    SAM_0065 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Place the floor jack under the new a-arm and raise it just enough to capture the steeda spring on the lip of the pocket. We left the stock rubber isolator in place. Also take notice of the blue tap alignment marks. This is to keep the spring from rotating two far in the pocket.

    SAM_0066 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0067 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Using the jack just lift up on the a-arm forcing the spring into the pocket, and bolt the strut to the spindle.....

    SAM_0067 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

Reinstalling the foam gasket just behind the dust cover.

    SAM_0071 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

All back together on the passenger side!

    SAM_0072 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

    SAM_0073 by capri_nut82, on Flickr

That's all I'm uploading for tonight folks.....

    Cleaned and going back together!

The bolts for the front arms were not tightened down at this time that will be done after she's on the ground so that they are torqued at ride height.

Now for the steering the rack, tie rods, pump, and lines were all sourced from autozone. The rack is a 86 svo spec 2.5 turn unit and pump/tie rods are 89 5.0L.

    Reconditioning the original hose clamps.

Removing the power steering cooler, just undue the top two radiator brackets and lean it back. With some luck you can pull the cooler out this way.

Going back together and hooking up lines.....

Now instead of running the motor to pump fluid back into the system we used an old belt and dads drill motor. This isn't as easy as it looks but man it worked well!

And with that she was ready to drop down and turn around. You can kinda see the 1'' drop in the front in these pics.

Here you can really see the drop the steeda springs and konis made.

Backed her in and up on jack stands. Plus a little preview of what's to come!

Thanks Jeff, she is coming along kinda slowly now as I have been sick.

As for the slide Its about 15 miles from us so were safe. But yes I have friends in town that are ok, but some folk we know didn't make it. The death toll is going to be quite large on this one mainly because the government stepped in and told the towns people and volunteers to stay away or go to jail. So instead of search and rescue its now all recovery for 150+ people.

The 8.8 rear end I got from BilltheCougarNut and it seams to be a 87-88 turbo coupe rear end with factory 3.55 gears. It was missing the axels, and the major pin that holds them in place. No big deal already snagged some and painted the rear.

Fount these O-rings on the ends of the axels gotta find new ones.

    Fresh paint

Not sure if I am going to stick with this diff cover or if a svo cover will pop up....

Good job man. I like the idea using the drill to get fluid through the power steering system. Doing it stage by stage is defiently the best way to do it so you don't get overwhelmed.
