    Default Help: 351w Swap

I found a 351w Carb'd... But my '83 Notch is a 3.8L V6, So theres a few things I need help figuring out. I've heard the 351w will bolt and work with my C4 no problem.... but i still feel the need to ask, will a C4 need any work to put up with the 351w? Does any place sell a direct harness that wires into the factory harness? Or how much work is it to make my V6 wiring fit a 351w? What other modifications will I need to do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
(Things I do know I'll need a oilpan kit and v8 Motor mounts)

You will need V8 motor mounts, they will bolt directly to your k-member. You will need a fox 351w swap oil pan kit yes. If you want to fuel inject it, my personal suggestion is find someone parting out an 86 5.0 and get every wire off of it. Easier to leave it carb'd.

You will probably have to extend the slot in the passenger side hole the motor mount stud goes into. On my 83L it is shorter than the drivers so my engine has a lean to it.

When I did mine, I used the vert mounts and it sits level. Not sure if the k member is different on the 83 and 85s.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at the mounts and size it all up.

You will have to swap out your K-member with a 4 or 8 cyl car. The v-6 has a totally different k-member.

No, a V6 K member is the same as the 4 &8, a straight 6 K member is the oddball. He's fine with what he has.

I have heard of people grinding the tit off the mount. Mine fit perfect not sure why yours would be off.

I am also interested in learning more about doing a swap. I recently got a 85 3.8l vert and would like to swap for 5.0. Have you made any progress on that swap? Have any suggestions?

if you run a duraspark distributor, it should plug right in to the 83 wiring

wiring was pretty easy. put a carb'd 5.0 where a carb'd 3.8 used to reside in mine, and it was pretty much plug and play using a duraspark distributor. mounted my coil on the p.s. strut tower. had to elongate a slot in my k member, but i don't remember the specifics. that was over 10 years ago. speaking of motor mounts, if you're in the market for polyurethane mounts buy energy suspensions ones, NOT prothane. that goes for the trans too, and you never want a solid one on the trans.

My neighbor is right in the middle of putting a 5.0 in his 3.8 1984 Notch. He also has to notch the slots in the k-frame for proper fit. They are quit a bit shorter slots than the V8/4 cyl. k-frame.

As mentioned if staying with a carburetor, use a Duraspark distributor and it will plug into your factory wiring provided you don't have CFI. You may need a longer throttle cable and you will need to get a kickdown linkage for the 351 in order to make your c4 work 100% correctly. The vacuum modulator will need to be hooked to manifold vacuum and if you plan on running dual exhaust, you will need to relocate your brake line to the center of the car unless you want to run dumps.

Sooner or latter the 7.5 under the rear of your car will give up the ghost and you should ugrade your brakes so you can slow down that high powered pony better. Don't forget subframe connectors either.
