    Default convertible back glass

Is it difficult to replace rear glass in convertible top in my shop at home. I was putting top down the other day to replace heater core and it broke when i put it down. I guess it was cold and old and made from plastic. Thanks

I am not the convertible expert, but the few that I have worked on the plastic rear window usually has a zipper around the top and then the bottom is stapled down to the tack strip under the rear trim. You have to remove the rear trim cover behind the rear seat to gain access to the tack strip. The other issue that some have mentioned is that the zipper location can vary and that adds to the difficulty in replacing just the rear window, so just be aware of that.

I have never done just the rear window, I have only replaced the entire top, window, and pads, so my disassembly was probably more than you will have to do. I believe you can replace the window by just unzipping, removing the rear trim, releasing from the tack strip, but you may or may not have to loosen some of the top at the rear to get the window in or out. That may only be necessary with the real glass window, but . . .

    Good Luck!

You should be able to unzip and remove the tack bar at the bottom like trey said.
Here is the whole assembly before install. All I did was zip that in and bolt it it up.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. My top was replaced a few years before I got it., but they re-used the original rear window curtain. The window is starting to separate at the left hand edge and I was also looking for a way to mend it temporarily. I looked into the procedure to replace the rear window curtain completely, but you basically have to take the entire rear section of the top and move it forward of the rear bow, where it is stapled at the top. If you could just zip in the replacement at the top of the existing top and then re-do the tack bar and reinstall it, it would save a lot of time and money.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead... Scotty, where did you get your rear window? I have one that needs to be replaced and I want to get one that has the "correct" zipper.

EDIT- Scotty, can you tell me what the brand is in case the vendor doesn't carry it anymore?

I would probably recommend checking with NPD. They are most likely going to be one of your best sources for OEM correct parts.

I had my convertible top replaced 2 summers ago. I regret that I didn't upgrade the rear glass to a rear defrost window. I was thinking of making my next mod setting up a stock looking rear defrost so I'd have to remove my glass without replacing the entire top.

can that be done? Any suggestions on what glass to get? From what year Mustang?

NPD is where the PO bought the top kit that I bought from him.
