Default Indy Airport Display Pace Car

Update on 480007. In August of '13, I purchased the car from the original owner. According to him, and confirmed by DST, the car is one of the first 12 or so sent to Dearborn Steel and Tube for hand assembly and "show prep." There are some differences between those first 12 and the production line Pace Cars. DST was one of Ford's go to skunkworks for projects like this. DST did the Thunderbolt's. I'm in the process of getting more info from DST currently.

Among the differences and what I've learned from DST, each car was sent "bare" to DST, where the body kits were added after the body's were sanded and buffed to remove all orange peel. The black used at DST had more of a texture to it than the flat black Ford used on the production like. DST also added a black area below the window line and above the tape stripe to add more "eye appeal." This was masked off crudely, with the idea that the tape stripes would cover it, but it does show through as seen in the pictures. When I questioned the original owner about this, he was adamant that he had this duplicated exactly as original when the car was restored in 2000. I have all receipts from the restoration, which total nearly $30,000. All NOS Ford parts were used.

From DST, the car was shipped to a Ford dealer in Indianapolis, then was placed in the Indianapolis International Airport (then known as Weir Cook Airport) for display from mid-April to the end of May. The original owner, a Ford employee, purchased the car from this dealer as a "used car" with 57 miles on it.

The only modifications to the car are an '84 Mustang 302 intake and '84 Holley/Ford 4bbl carb. When I purchased the car, it had '85 finned valve covers and the '85 dual snorkel intake, which I replaced with restored original valve covers and air cleaner. I've also added aftermarket cruise control, hiding the actuator low on the right rear side of the engine compartment. Only the extra cable gives it away. The control is the "pad type" and is hidden inside the ash tray.

It's a great car to drive and we'll drive it to Charlotte. The restoration is starting to show some age, so it makes for a perfect driver.
Below are pictures of the buck tag, the DST paint mods, and the textured black paint found on the hood scoop and rockers.

According to 9F03F480007's buck tag the power locks and louvers are not original to the car.

Interesting on the DST connection. Might explain why there is no rotations number on the buck tag.

Power locks are not original and added later. Louvers were added by Paul Harvey Ford, as most louvers were.

Can you decode that buck tag for me? It looks like there are some stamping on there that are very crude.

    Thanks!

Thanks! Appreciate it! Trying to find some DST evidence, but I suppose the window sticker saying the car was sold internally to FoMoCo and shipped to DST is good enough.

Hi FoxChassis : Thank you. Hey just curious, do you have an estimate on how many Pacecars that are on the road today ? Or road worthy or still in existence ? I was wondering on how many Pacecars are still left ? Thanks Tim
