Default 1985 Detroit Grand Prix Capri Pace Car Has Arrived!

The 1985 Detroit Grand Prix 4 Pace Car has been delivered to the Cultural Center of the Universe Nashville Tennessee.

This is the actual Pace for the 1985 Detroit Grand Prix. The car has been owned for the last 15-20 years by the same owner who made into yard art.

Below are 2 photo albums. One is of the car as delivered late Saturday night in ALL its exterior dirty, nasty glory. The second photo album is of the car today AFTER 1 hour of pressure washing/cleaning to remove at least 8+ years of Florida where the car has sat outside as yard art. As you can see the tires are all flat in the second photo album as the tires will not hold air for over 1 hour. Yes they are that bad! The car headlight covers and tailight covers are with the car and in good condition. I removed them from the car for washing. The interior is STILL nasty dirty as I did not make time today to mess with the inside.

Yesterday (Sunday) I had a very successful day sourcing parts for the car. THANKS KENDALL!

The body buck tag is still on the car as is the driver's door sticker.

    Enjoy the SQUARES!!!!!

This album is of the car as received.

This album if of the car after pressure washing.

Very nice! I'm glad to see that it's all "in one piece". What are your plans for it? I'm secretly hoping that you'll restore it, complete with reproduced graphics. That would be killer!

That's a very interesting find. I am glad it was rescued and is in good hands. A period-correct restoration would be cool.

That car is ROUGH. It is a shame for it to be treated so badly. It looks really good with the graphics. Hope it is restored back to this.

That's true, but it looks fairly intact and a decent foundation to build off of IMO.

Congratulations on your purchase. It is a very eye-catching car! I cant wait to see what happens.

Congrats on the purchase Mike, can't wait to see it fixed up. That's definitely a deserving and unique car. Sure is amazing how neglected some of these cars are!

"Lucccckkkyyy" that is too cool. Also just amazed that it was never complete destroyed/repainted etc etc

I find it weird that it's an AC delete car, that has to be the only delete McLaren. Is it a radio delete as well? And just noticed it still has the ac equipped dash bezels.

Looks like this car was ordered/built with NO options.

All or the following was standard with the 1985 Capri GS and RS/5.0L:
AM/FM stereo radio (code 4 on door tag)
    electric rear window defroster
    interval windshield wipers
    light group
    power side windows
    tilt steering wheel
    tinted glass

The car is actually much better than I expected.

With the car still being wet under the hood from pressure washing the pictures make the car look much worse than in person. The worst rust in the car is the front lower radiator support. It is gone! The front frame rails on both sides are still nice and white with paint. The upper aprons particularly on the passenger side have some rust typical of a 65-66 Mustang. The floors are all good with the exception of the driver's floor where the rear driver's seat track bolts to the floor which is very typical on a Foxbody. The rear frame rails, spare tire well, lower rear drop-offs are all good. The damaged right rear quarter panel will repair without replacement. The left quarter is good with only 1 rust spot high right below the rear quarter window. Both doors will need replaced due to rust at the bottom. The rear hatch has small rust at the rear bottom that is repairable.

I have purchased from Kendall a perfect rust-free body with every and any original piece of metal I could ever need and more so the repair should proceed nicely.

Yes it is a shame that the previous owners let the car sit but that IS the reality. Maybe I can change that!

Yes as usual you are CORRECT!

This is a NO option car. Jason (the registry operator) tells me there were 2 no option cars in the 30 that were built that he is aware of. This was the second car built and the No Option status of the car could have been a factor in this car becoming/chosen the actual Pace Car.

The car is not a Mclaren!

No where on the car is any mention of Mclaren although he car was at McClaren and received some McClaren parts. The car still has the Mercury badge in the front grill.

According to Jason at the registry the decision to not have Mclaren anywhere on the car was by design per Mercury Motorsports.

What I find cool about these cars is that there are still cars around with unique histories that the average Joe doesn't know or care about so we can still find them tucked away and get them for a reasonable price. Honestly, I would sell my '82 tomorrow for that Capri. Would you be able to start a build thread so I can subscribe?

I don't have room to talk as my project needs a lot of attention. I do really like the look of it and hope it comes back to like new. I may not make friends here but I don't care much for the bubble back glass on Capri's. I love the grill and hood on them however probably more than a mustang. It looks meaner and more aggressive. What year were Capri's that had no bubble back glass?

That would be something for it to see a few more laps on the downtown streets of Detroit.
The basic circuit is still there, except for the part at the GM WHQ (turns 1-3,1.
