Well Jess, I wish I could say I had more free time to do this type of thing. I've never really been one to rush into much blindly but these new challenges that come up try the patience! With my boys almost both grown and definitely not needing my full attention anymore, it can be easier to find time to do other stuff. To bad it is usually chore, honey-do or emergency to-do related!
Isn't that the truth Trey! Waaay longer than I had ever thought! Getting this part behind me will now allow me to get some momentum moving forward!
I really appreciate the kind words gents! I may have to put this car in protective custody after this!
So, when we redid this oil pan gasket almost a year ago by the book there was a small split at a corner bolt when it was torqued. I figured it was only on the outer portion and never thought much of it and the engine has stayed on the stand since. Even with no oil in the sump and just whatever residual remains in the block, there was a small wet spot at this location and one other
No way I could put it in when I wasn't sure...NOS gaskets for a 79 2.8 are not really cheap or readily available anymore so I ended up buying some of the cork FelPro ones though RockAuto. I never searched high and low here but the usual places did not carry them. I bought a few because they were on sale Murphy's law would have me screw one up and be SOL again. This way nothing will go wrong. Right?
So here it sits until the gaskets arrive. Hopefully by this weekend.

With the wet sanding and polishing done, I cleaned up the residue and mess in the engine compartment. With no action happening on the engine install prep, it allowed me to start unpacking crates and getting everything ready to receive it when it is ready!

This post catches me back up to real time! It's amazing so much work can be covered in a few posts, a couple sentences and some pictures
So with engine install on temporary hold, that gave me the time to work on some of the final prep work for the trim repaint on New Year's Day.
All scuffed up, masked up and ready for some black! You'll notice I over sprayed the base and clear into where the black would go to aid in a smoother transition!

Last to do will be to sand down the rear bumper belt trim area. I almost think that someone bumper tapped it looking at the way it chipped. That or I just did a really bad prep job. It will get a good coat of adhesion promoter this time (right Dave?)!

See Darran, you’ve been quiet but real busy. On the other hand, I’ve been quiet but doing nothing!
That looks really good, nice work.
Amazing progress. Makes me wish I could get going on my Ghia, which is sitting under a snow-covered car cover. I can see her from office window. Back surgery recovery has placed my life on hold for the time being.

Those trim lines on these bumpers are a pita. When I painted my 79 the trim paint came off with my masking tape. I had to resand it and go over the whole thing, but I finally got it to stick. Now I have to redo it again since some ignorant ass bumped my car while I had it parked on the street. The only reason it was on the street is because I was priming my son's 84.

Thanks Mike! I wished I had your experience setting up carbs! This one is good at the base rebuild but I know it could do a little better with some tweaks!
I appreciate your praise Dave. Your work amazes me and if I can learn to do a fraction of what you can do in a quarter the time I would be showing way more progress! I'm happy I am now on a roll. It's been a roller coaster of emotion and work!
That would be cool Ed! You would have to stay in third gear to allow me to keep up!
Craig! You will get there man! You've been through a lot but the time will come. Recouperate and get better. The you will get a plan I am sure!
Agreed and this is one of those early 79 ones too that seem to usually disintegrate!
Regardless, with the front pretty much ready to go, I started the sanding of the rear belt. After getting down nearer where the failures in the coating were, it looked like it was where I had done a fill previously! Regardless, I stripped it all down and redid the trouble spots that I found with the two part urethane repair stuff I now have.
I sanded it all down after again and pulled the sanding mask back.

Now masked and ready for some adhesion promotor and primer again before the paint.

Not enough time to mix primer and spray the cover gave me time to look at the passenger door.
From my previous learnings the reproduction dew wipe moulding kit does a pretty good job.

I didn't think I had the right rivets to put the handle back on and had thought of using stainless steel bolts as others suggest but I ended up having some of the correct ones! With the handle back on I had just enough time to finish the rest before calling it a day! No more door stuff left to do!

So the gaskets took a few extra days to get here than I thought....
Last weekend I flipped the engine over to take the pan off and take a closer look to see what caused the latest issue.
Clearly looks pretty smooshed. Not sure if the issue is the inch pound torque wrench I'm using or whether the pan may be of issue
I looked closer at the pan and it looked like there may be some warping from the bolts torqueing down. I took a little time to hammer and flatten down these bolt formed dimples to regain a flat sealing surface.

http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...kkykp.jpg.html
These are to be torqued 5-7 foot pounds but not knowing if my inch pound 1/4" drive wrench is close to calibrated, I was very carful to not over tighten, over squish or possibly split.
Cross your fingers for me. V8 swap if it doesn't seal this time!

So, one thing leads to another after the oil pan was done.
So glad I bought my own hoist. It will end up paying for itself in the next number of years (it better not be to pull this engine out again though! )
This was a little bit of a pain because I was working by myself. There was a lot of up top and underneath switches. It made for a good workout! I finally got the angle right to get the dowels on the bell lined up and the motor mounts lined up at the same time. The book does not recommend lifting the transmission out with the 2.8 engine.
Slowly but surely...

Even though I've been whittling down the list, I did have to add one thing that I almost forgot about; the very bottom of the rocker by the pinch weld.
When the frame was straightened, the car was clamped to the frame machine from here. There were a handful of deep, serrated jaw marks embedded into the paint on each side that needed sanding out and then prepping for repaint. Oh, yay, more masking too!

I've been really lucky. Being really busy at work putting in long hours and thinly walking the line spending enough time with my wife when I am off, I still managed to get a 4-5 hour shift in on the car on Sunday.
My main focus was to get the black trim done on the bumper covers. While I had delusions of being able to colour and clear the rocker as well, I only managed to get primer on that part!
A blast of adhesion promotor and a couple of light coats of 2K primer.

I honestly like the way the SEM trim black paint lays out from the aerosol.
http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...v7bok.jpg.html
Some small imperfections along parts of the belt line...My great masking skills at work again me thinks but it's fixable for me. At least now I can get the front header back in and assemble the lights and what not.

It’s really coming together again, it looks really nice. SEM rattle can has a nice eggshell-ish sheen to it. Good choice.
At the rate your going, this car will be ready for the spring driving season. Congrats on the progress!

Thanks Joe. I'm thinking it should be done by spring too. That is a three month block to aim for
Not sure what the plan is for later this year. Jackson moved out in early December. He's been working at my company for almost a year in our shop and is now getting into the pipefitting trade. Financially, at present he cannot afford to drive it and has no where to put it. Having insurance rates like youngsters have makes it hard to afford on two vehicles (this car won't ever be a DD again ).
I think my plan is to insure it under my Hagerty policy and enjoy it for a bit myself. Relish in it a little Be the custodian for a bit
Thanks Dave. I need to keep it up now. I procrastinated in the early stages of these repairs due to uncertainty and frustration. Now that I have the momentum, the reassembly will hopefully be a breeze!
If you were repainting these black mouldings in your shop, what colour would you use? I know you didn't go factory on your car but is there a color match? I'd almost rather mix my own; these rattle cans are pricey up here!
That front bumper cover looks pretty good. Glad it went to good use. I'm not sure of the brand but my black trim was all done with rattle cans too.
I’ll use a hardened basecoat picked from the color books that we have for each manufacturer. The books will list the trim color code, then I just mix it.
admittedly on my car I’ve been using a “custom” half an eggshell clear coat (not quite matte, not quite eggshell). More durable than regularly. Back in the eighties we would just use a rattle can though to redo the mouldings.
All that said, I think your stuck with the rattle cans and their price.
Rereading that I realize I’m no help whatsoever.
I've been off the site for a while now because of numerous lower back surgeries but I gotta say, this is absolutely incredible! I owed a 79 with the same power train as yours and I loved it. I bought it back around 85 or so, I don't have it anymore, been many years but I do have this one for about ten years. Maybe some day I can get around to doing the exterior too, It has the black interior and the paints original too.
