Would it help you with the blend if I get one of my helpers to video me blending a door?

Ask me anything about it that makes you hesitant, I'll try to help you out the best I can.

Btw, your comment, "I am getting quicker at pulling the interior apart" had me laughing more than a little bit. It seems I understand that comment way to well.

It's easy to loose mojo on big jobs. You're so close though, convince yourself to just get the paint back on it. After your have it sprayed everything else can be piece mealed back together. You know what I mean? You can work on putting the engine back in, then take a break from that and work on another area, then back to buffing, etc.....

Nothing else will require so much consistent attention as getting it painted. Pick a weekend and get it shot. Think how good it'll feel when you have that done.

Hopefully the new headliner will work out better for you. I have been figuring out some sort of liner for my coupe as well to clean up the inside. I wouldn't mine using your original to make a template from sometime.

Thanks for the motivation Dave. Spring has given me the usual additional chores and stuff to do which typically take precedent over the projects.

I may take you up on the offer for some advice soon.

The comment about getting quicker on the interior should pertain to body work and painting also...once I get more experience. Trey had mentioned in a post about body work that he had screwed up almost everything at least once along the way to get where he is for knowledge and experience. While I have made quite a few along the way, I do not want to screw anything up on this...I do not want to be redoing anything due to a rookie mistake. I'm still thinking of pulling the belt moulding and chrome and repainting the entire passenger door. I could easily suck at trying to mask, blend or transition into the existing paint....

I am using my spare piece of PVC sheet for this. It was supplosed to be for our blue coupe so I may need to get another for it. I would try to use ABS if I can get it next time.

This is where I got the material from: http://goindustrial.ca/index.php/en/

Ed you are more than welcome to use the old board as a template for yours if you need it.

Man the last few weeks have flown by! Busy at work and always doing stuff around the house or other obligations on the weekend days off.

Last weekend, I had went to spend the day with my dad on his farm an hour and a half away. I took some larger parts taking up space up there; three fenders and the original hood again. When I was pulling the hood off the wall where it was hanging, I literally just tapped the edge of a spare hatch glass I had....shattered.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...rbdm9.jpg.html

Longer daylight hours may help to get some weekday time in. Not that I haven't been doing nothing on the car in the last while, just not providing frequent updates

I am 95+ percent masked for the front end and engine bay. Time consuming...

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...1ogss.jpg.html

Then I finally sanded down the edge of the passenger door. I blended further out from the edge up to 600 grit. Now to decide what I want to do from here with it.

All I need to do are the bends to get it formed. I think one thing that I need to do other than scuff the plastic and use a good adhesive is to use an adhesion promoter beforehand. I beleive the replacement headliners you buy online use an ABS type plastic so maybe just the choice of plastic (on the plastic shops recommendation) made this cursed from the start. I am getting quicker at pulling the interior apart
So a while ago, to get more of the headliner done and out of my hair. I cleaned and scuffed it good with 100 grit. Then I used a pipe on a horse to use as a mandrel and gave it some heat along the length of the bend to form them.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...giwt8.jpg.html

I needed to reinstall the board to ensure the joints were correct. The shape and cuts are close as are the bends I made (althought they aren't quite as pretty as Version 2. There was a little stress in a couple of areas so I decided to leave it installed for a while. Maybe leaving it static like this will allow it to form better. That and it's not taking up space elsewhere.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...e09xe.jpg.html

As I had said earlier, I was not confident to blend the passenger door edge repair into the rest of the door I removed the chrome trim, mirror, lock and belt molding. The current plan is to block down and respray the door from the top of the gravel guard under the belt molding to the bottom of the window. The transition will be under the dew wipe chrome moulding. I did a small amount of damage to the existing paint removing the leftover adhesive with a razor so I will need to do a little extra sanding to take care of that.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...vbjav.jpg.html

I managed to meet up with BMW Rider Ed and used his little blasting babinet for the JY replacement hood hinges and bumper mounts I am using. Really good shape, just needing a little extra attention. Then I used some Eastwood Rust Encapsulator

So the previous post wasn't maybe what you were looking to see Dave but your first comment above stuck in my head these past weeks. I just could never seem to be able to commit enough consecutive hours together to do this (at least what my mind told me I needed)!

Yesterday, we had a cooler, rainy, breezy day. After getting the hinges and bumper mounts redone I never realized how close I was so I committed to doing the engine compartment this weekend.

The hinges and the bumper supports went in.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...7fygu.jpg.html

This led me to toss on the hood to make sure they were adjusted close so not to disturb paint too much later.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...ph4l5.jpg.html

I wasn't planning on doing anything special for a booth this time. Plain and simple...drop sheets hanging from the ceiling and over anything else that needed it.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...uhnng.jpg.html

I get the best cross breezes through my garage and with it raining it was the perfect storm. Pun intended. Big door cracked about 8", the back little door open and a couple of box fans to help the flow along.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...iur92.jpg.html

I also had some loose fasteners ready to go. Fender and hood.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...ihz1v.jpg.html

The process then started with some rust encapsulator in those newly exposed areas.

    The mixology station.

I used my touch up gun to start with. For one to get my touch back and two to ensure I could get in everywhere with relative ease to apply product.

Here is the first light primer coat over the bare areas.

    And a second light coat.

I switched to the bigger gun for the final coat.

It was a pretty long day yesterday. I had started around 11 am and finished up around 8:30. I took a while with flash times, mixing and then cleaning all of the guns after each step! The rain stopped around 9 PM and this morning is clear so I am glad I took advantage of the weather and never procratinated it into today. Today I am going to demask and wrap up the drop sheets.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. It sure helps!

While I still seem to fill all my off hours being a busy body doing something, I still have found the time to do some things on the car.

I spent an afternoon blocking the door. I can't decide if I want to remove the handle again. I want to, I have the right rivet gun I don't think I have replacement rivets

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...fa6bw.jpg.html

I had noticed when I unmasked the engine compartment that my plastic must have had a little slack behind the DS strut tower. It was pretty tight to blend into there and the clear stuck

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...fijje.jpg.html

With my fixing f***-up skills growing I took to sanding starting lightly at 400 and going to 2000 and then hand polish with a cloth. It's in an inconspicuous spot but it looks so much better

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...ucbzn.jpg.html

Last weekend the weather was nice and a friend came over for a quick visit.

Sounds like a lot of progress has been made. Can't see it because of PHOTOBUCKET! On top of the fact they block your photos if you go an manually try to navigate Photobucket sites now they are slower than all get out. I hope no one is paying them.

My desktop gave it up late last week so no official updates yet Dave!

    As for Photobucket...

I've been slowly changing all of the hosting links to be direct links to the pictures in all of my posts. That allows you to click the links and then still see the pictures. Once I get my new hosting direction figured out moving forward I hope to reestablish all of the photos in my posts.

Default New Year's resolution - Updates

So I have been neglectful not only of finding time and motivation to work on the car over the last six months, I have also been neglectful of providing updates for what I have done. I also have ideas to set up a 3rd party web service but have not committed any more than thinking about it.

After painting the engine compartment, I thought I would be on a roll. Instead, I run into another issue: Colour matching. In typical fashion, I will share these challenges with you all.

When I first painted, I had run out of base coat and had more mixed and did not have any real issues that I recall. For this repaint I confidently thought I would only need a quart or so and had it mixed.

While the previous pictures you saw look decent enough I saw this after I started to unmask.

The firewall transition looked not bad which was encouraging but this colour issue froze me in my tracks Was the small batch I had mixed incorrect? One extra drip of something could make a huge difference. Did I do something different in application or coats? Did I mix the base coat incorrectly?

Default Colour code 85 - 50 Shades of Tangerine

I eventually made it to the body shop supply store to discuss and show them the issue I had with their product. No explanation other than possibly human error and the small quantity. They were apologetic of course but I also never double checked before I applied. It looked "correct" when I mixed it up.

I did need more base coat to finish the exterior anyways so the mixologist followed the recipe "exactly" and mixed me two more quarts...

The new batch is on the left:

I had mentioned that I was not going nearly to the extent of the booth I did the first go around! When I did the engine compartment back in June, the weather and breeze was perfect and I had natural ventilation.

With more paint in hand and acceptance of needing to leave the engine compartment as it (it has become less noticeable of a difference since) and forge ahead I did a test spray of the hood scoop. To my eye, this colour is pretty damn close.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...ssiys.jpg.html

With that, I completed the remaining prep work on the door and the last transitions. I decided to respray the cowl area with the exterior to ensure a match.

    http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...7zvwu.jpg.html

I knew I needed to boogey in order to get any painting done before cooler fall weather hit. I built some simple wood frames to house some filters for the air inlet and a second one to hold three box type exhaust fans. Nice to have two man doors This seemed to work perfect for me having the car offset in the garage. Just enough air flow!

Overall, I think the colour looks pretty close. This colour is so translucent that different lighting and angles make it almost change slightly.

Most of it turned out pretty good. Of course at this stage, I do have some work ahead of me to get this to match the rest of the car.

    Default Catching up.

    Fast forwarding.

After the extensive time I spent wet sanding and polishing the car the first time around plus the learnings along the way through that long ordeal I figured this would be a simple endeavour

I was happy to fight through it and get it down to the first and second polish in one weekend. This is where I noted that I did not get all of the initial 1200 grit scratches out when I switched to 1500 grit

While it looked good, up close with light I could see the scratches...

    Default Repolish!

I have been super busy at work doing all except one of the last eight Saturdays leading up to Christmas

This didn't leave any free time to get anything done on top of all of the other seasonal stuff. I was off this last week and got back to it!

I started wet sanding again with a light 1200, back to 1500 and then 2000 grit. From there back to the polish. I also added in doing the time consuming front cover into the mix also.

    Default Wow, is that shiny!

So I must say that I am impressed with the final result after doing this a second time. Good thing there is a lot of clear on there I feel the current results are better than V1.
