I watched that episode too, but did you see the seals on the front china rail? thats why it was leaking...... what a mess. And when he installed the intake he slopped that gasket maker on both sides of the new cork gasket....

Yeah, I wondered about all that RTV.

And that was a Fel-Pro gasket, so someone else has already been in there too. I know it's Fel-Pro because it looks just like the one I installed on mine.

I got the trans disconnected from the engine today. Looks like I need some more parts to get that perfect clutch feel I'm after.

    http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...=1#post1913218

That's as far as I got today. I can't fit my impact between the engine and trans at the moment, so I didn't get the flywheel off. I want to leave the trans up in the tunnel so I don't have to attempt to lift it up there again without it tipping over. It was a real pain getting it to this point too. I'm not looking forward to the reinstall.

Well, fellers.... The rear main seal was, in fact, missing.

All I can figure is that having that cardboard there under the trans hid the fact that this thing had been spewing oil the whole time. It's pretty amazing, just how much oil it was able to absorb before I took it out of there, but there you have it. I'm dumb.

I can't let you away with this Brad.

Dee Uwe Em Bee your not.

All vehicles I've worked on still have rope seals (except for my Nissan RB25 and Toyota 3SGE twin cam multi Jerk with 23 specialist tools to rebuild and fit the 23 specialist seals and parts...true automotive built-in no rebuilDUNCE).

The advent of the PE main seal for the IIRC, some of the 69 Ford 302's as a retrofit is kind of a cross over of where it is noticable to everyone. But you gotta know to understand.

Dee Uwe Em Bee-rs choose to be ignorant.

You are a great example of the self enligntening people who take time to ask, query, network and do. Sometimes Do, then network, then query then ask.

Whatever, your gonna get this sucker working just fine.

At least you didn't put the headgaskets on backwards or upside down. Like the Model T, the things that make Fords a little akward also make them 100% servicable.

    Props to ya.

And tell your beloved..."I may not be a freekin rocket scientist, honey, but I know what a 5.0 EFi era main seal is!".

Thank you, I appreciate it. I wasn't actually that down on myself this time. You're right though, it is hard to notice! I'd never actually seen what you do to install them either, so that didn't help.

The Zone actually had the seal IN STOCK (I almost fainted), so I got it in there and the flywheel and separator plate back installed. I drained what was left of the oil too. There was a good 3-4 quarts in there, and it was not shimmering with metal shavings. So that's a win. I haven't cut open the filter yet, but there was really no sign of anything in the oil.

So, did you forget to install it, or did it get ripped out? If so, where are the remains. If you forget it, that is a actually a huge relief and as was said you figured out the clutch fork problem. At least the clutch fork/ball and rear main seal are pretty easy fixes. Just make sure you put the seal in facing the correct way.

Yep, I forgot it. I'd never installed one or even knew what they were supposed to look like. In my defense, I think it's pretty easy to think it's actually there when it's not at a glance....

But yep, seems like no harm done!

Well, today was another day where I had to just give up in disgusted defeat. My clutch fork and pivot ball showed up, and I was pretty excited, so I thought i would install them. I pulled the bellhousing off to do it, so I could slide the clutch fork onto the pivot ball from the side, like you're supposed to. I left the trans up under the car on jacks. When I went to put it back on, the whole mess fell off the jacks. Fought the thing back on the jacks and up under the car again. I thought maybe I'll see if I can slowly and methodically get things to line up and maybe I could have this infuriating transmission operation over and done with. I got everything very close to lined up. Sighting into the clutch fork hole, the input shaft seemed to be engaged with the clutch disc and pilot bearing. BUT, when you would look at how the bellhousing was lining up with the dowels, everything was 1/2" to the left. WTF?!

I tried more maneuvering with the jacks: up, down, side to side. Did no good. The last time pushing and wiggling it fell of the G**D*** jacks again. After that, I was done.

The clutch fork action feels GREAT with the throwout bearing CORRECTLY installed. Too bad I may never get the transmission in the car so I can take advantage of it.

Can you install the bellhousing first then stab in the transmission? I usually try and do them that way but sometimes the car will not let you LOL.

If not try a rachet strap and see if you can secure the transmission to the jacks enough to where it will not fall but still wiggle.

Yeah, mine won't let you. It's because of how my engine is moved back.

I'm pretty sure my garage floor would need to be redone for me to be able to have a hoist. That and, y'know, I'd have to pay for it.

Try using my trick of the long 7/16" bolts with the heads cut off as guides to help line up the bell housing to the engine. You can adjust the length of the bolts to the space you have available. Use at least one bolt per side, but two per side works better if you can.

You can also use one bolt per side with the head cut off as guides, then once you are on the two bolts, you can use another pair of long bolts with the heads intact to help hold the transmission there and prevent it from sliding back as well as guiding it into position. Good Luck!

OH!!! DON"T forget to only hand thread the bolts in and don't fully seat them since if they have the heads cut off you have to remove them by hand so you don't want them tight. Just thread them in till they seat and back them off 1/2 turn or so. Just want them threaded in enough so they stay in place and the block threads don't get damaged due to any weight from the transmission.

Or cut a slot in the cut off end so that you can use a large screw driver to get them out if necessary. BTDTGTS*

That's a good idea! I just so happen to have some extras too.

As for the ratchet strap idea, I notice that my jack has handles you could attach them to, but they are on the stationary part, not the part that swings. If that's what those are for, that's kind of a stupid design. Ugh.

Oh, and you may have noticed the bungies in the blurry foreground of the pic. They did nothing whatsoever. Useless.

Well, the wife offered to give me a hand later today. We'll see what happens.

A little late but maybe something like the below items can be found local for rent if need be.

    https://www.amazon.com/TRANSMISSION-.../dp/B00P6ZKA8Q

Since I'm not getting any younger... I'm thinking about buying the table/cart deal or one like it when I free up some funds.

I've got a pretty bad oil leak somewhere on my Farimont too. It's either a main seal or an oil pan gasket. Not sure I'm going to try and solve that one though before I sell it. Glad you were able to hunt it down on yours though Brad!

Handy stuff. The middle one especially, since the stupid T-5 has that damned rib running down the middle of it. Practically designed to tip over.

Heck age has nothing to do with having nice tools like that riser table. We are all not built for weightlifting even when young.
A engine picker can be used to transfer trans to a bench just like use with a 4 wheel engine stand (3 wheel ones can tip).

I bought a low profile hyd trans jack. One use paid for itself. Family member used it too changing transmissions in his cars.
Low profile is best. One that sits on a jack saddle may be too high to fit under the car after adding trans height.
Dunno what to use if car is on a lift.

Saving time, one's back, fingers, arm, muscle strain, is worth the money. Safety using the correct tools. Overkill is ok.
Fighting things doing car work is no fun.

Removing manual trans, the bell can be left on unless replacing clutch assy. The fork arm can be replaced with it installed.
Either way, removing the trans first allows easier access to the top bell bolts.
If bell is on, rotate trans yoke when reinserting so the splines can line up into the clutch disk..
Lube the fork arm pivot with a dab o' chassis grease. Lube t/o brg face too where it touches the pp. I think i smeared on a thin layer of white grease.

Pilot pegs to aid install of anything is a good idea. Ones with rounded or pointed ends are an option. Kind of like how hood pin studs are shaped.
Factories use them all the time on the line in one form or another.
