    Default door _panel_ differences?

    Hi,

I've always read that the 79-86 doors were interchangeable, except for the 79 'low pull' door handles.

However I've encountered a problem putting my 84 Capri together. The stock doors were rusted so I picked up a set of white doors, which didn't have the riveted on outer molding, so I thought they were 79-86.

Looking at the picture you can see the lower front corner the mounting hole is different between the 84 (grey panel) and the other one.

Here is the best picture of the door I have right now. Note no opening for speakers, again suggesting it is a 79-86 door.

Any idea what year this door came from?

There were some 87-93 cars that had a radio delete option, which would not have speakers. Some food for thought.

Thanks, but the studs along the outside of the glass for the molding aren't there and there is no sign the holes were welded up, suggesting it is a 79-86.

I love that color. Kind of looks like a dark shadow grey. Make sure you post pics when you get finished.

I don't know what year the doors are but I would just drill a hole in the correct location for the 84 door panel. Good luck. you're doing an awesome job and I can't wait to see it back together.

Thanks, I was going to drill the correct hole, but wanted to see if anyone knew which year this is from so we can know if the 'all 79-86 doors are the same' urban legend isn't true. I see the board admins are looking for articles for this site and this is definitely a FAQ!

bump. Anyone else have an idea what year these doors are from?

I forgot to mention that the doors originally had power windows.

I don't remember exactly where on the door and I am on a Rig right now, so I can't check any of my spare doors, but there should be a production date stamp on the sheet metal somewhere. That should give you an actual production date of the door that will narrow down what year model it was for. I agree that the door is not a 87-93 based upon the lack of speaker hole and the lack of trim holes on the top of the door. I will be home late tomorrow and I will try and see if I can find a date stamp on one of my spares.
