Default No Aussie Falcon for the US Market...

Filed under: Sedan, SUV, Plants/Manufacturing, Ford, Australia

Ford began manufacturing cars in Australia in 1925 with the Model T. In 2016, Ford will stop manufacturing cars Down Under, including the Falcon and the Territory SUV, as Ford Australia CEO Bob Graziano has reportedly confirmed the closure of the Broadmeadows assembly plant and the Geelong engine plant, both in the state of Victoria. There will be 650 jobs lost at Broadmeadows, 510 sacrificed at Geelong. Of the roughly 3,000 workers The Blue Oval has in Australia, it's said it will try to retain about 1,000 of them at its R&D and product development facilities.

The writing hasn't just been on the wall, it's been a regular item in all the papers and on Ford's bottom line for years. As recently as 2003, Ford sold nearly 75,000 Falcons, but over the next four years annual sales dropped by something like 10,000 units, and the last two years, it has sold less than 20,000 per year. It isn't only Ford that has suffered - sales of the other large, locally produced sedan, the Holden Commodore, have also gone over the precipice, triggering the same kind of angst about Holden's continued existence. Ford is the smallest of Australia's local automakers, Holden and Toyota the others, and has posted losses of $AUD141 million last year ($136M US) and $AUD600 million ($580M US) in the past five years. Graziano said the cost of manufacturing is simply too expensive in the country, twice as high as Europe and three times as high as Asia, and there no way to make a business case for staying in the country.

In January 2012, Ford Australia announced it would stay in the country until at least 2016, but by July of the same year, most outside observers were quietly declaring that 2016 would be the last year of Ford Down Under, and even the speculation was making other observers nervous. Ford received money from the Victorian government last year to aid its refresh of the Falcon and Territory, which will continue on schedule for the 2014 model year. An front- and all-wheel-drive sedan on a global platform is predicted to replace the Falcon, with some other SUV expected to replace the Territory. The company says it still intends to expand its lineup in the country.

As for what will replace the employment hole at the factories and the supplier base, no one is quite sure. Ford has said that the employees will receive their entitlements, and workers do have three years to prepare for what's coming. As well, the state and national governments have already committed tens of millions to a fund to assist the employees.Ford to cease Australian automaking operations after 90 years originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 May 2013 08:01:00 EST. This is so distressing. The hopes that I held for so many years have now officially been dashed.

In my own way, I guess I have....

I don't buy very many new products anymore...

Last new car I bought was 1994, before that I bought 11 new cars in 10 years!

These days I prefer picking the used market for stuff I like!

Their latest head of state is a far left socialist and their economy is in a rough spot right now. When I was there in 2002 I was seeing new Mustang Cobras that had been converted to right hand drive in Australia. They had to take half of the car apart to do the conversion. They were selling for about $80,000 Aussie dollars then. I don't know if the current Mustang is sold there.

    Wishful thinking......

Bring the tooling over here and continue the line. Why is every other car company going back to rwd, and Ford staying fwd??

I think Ford is just waiting out this V8 RWD sedan trend until CAFE rules make V8s practically impossible. It won't be long.

But it's really too bad for us enthusiasts who can't rationalize a Mustang as a family hauler, but want V8 power. The Taurus SHO is a fine car, and it might even be fast, but I don't want it because it's not a V8. Ford is willing to leave this market to competitors, who are using it (wisely) to stir up American pride in a traditional American-style car and drive people into the showrooms, even if they don't end up in a Charger or what have you. Ford can say, "Hey we have our pony car!" but they have those TOO!

i grew up in australia, and go back every few, but i must say that its all the australian governments reason why ford failed there and holden will be soon be in the same boat. the problem is you cant even inmagine how many asian name brands are sold there, let alone indian if a country makes cars they are sold there, they are ugly and cheap crap cars and people keep buying them because they are so cheap! its like the aussie government cant say no to higher import taxes on imported cars so thats a great way to help out the aussie workers.....

Couldn't agree more guys.I never responded to this thread because im a Kiwi; The last forum I was on the moderator responded to others and cordially locked the post because a broad sweeping statement repeating how a politician told Ford and GM they could get f.@:$ed in parliment was seen as poli+iç@|.

I'm not sure about the market economy, but if you read books by Bertran Gross, you'll soon decide to put your head in the sand and step back from involvement with counties. That would be sad.

Meantime, try and enjoy the Ranger. The T6 platform was a co-op between Toyo Kogyo and Ford Australia, initially as a milatry light SUV. It sells like hot cakes and is also built in Thailand as a Mazda BT50 and Ranger as well, so Ford is still thinking Global.

Having the Ranger back here is cool, and the new Bronco looks sweet (if you can wait that long, tease, tease, tease, delay, delay, delay... ) but Ford is not getting one cent of my money on a new vehicle until they are willing to sell me something I want, a small sedan or hatch. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they've delayed the Bronco so long that they end up missing the boat on the SUV renaissance. Oops, gas prices went way back up, and now no one wants them anymore. I'm going to laugh my @$$ off.

    Thumbs up

Ford is looking at the cost verses price thing. It has a go to plan if things get rougher. It can buy any other auto makers platform and make it "its own", at a cost that will make Toyota weep.

The rest of the industry can collapse, and Ford will make it because...They Got the Ford V8.

Que Mr Leary, with a rehash of I am an A hole.

The fact that Dearborn decided to use a 100% Australian designed platform to remake a Ranger proves an innate ability to see where the smart money is.

Of course, we discussed with you twice the fundamental importance of the option of a Pushrod V8 engined Ford Transit Connect and with PaceFever79, a proper V8 Focus.

Well just down size the Windsor V8, and insert it into the Spanish made TC and Fiesta.

And we gotta do a Boss 302 Ranger....

If Ford came out with a slightly Ford-ified version of a competitor's car, I wouldn't buy that either.

Didn't you like the 1990 to 2003 Mazda based Escorts with Ford engines. These Love Handel equiped jelly moulds were just excellent.

And Joe, you know how much I love your Red Racer.

I did, but don't you think I would've traded them in a second for the European market Escort? We didn't know any better at that time. The Euro models were forbidden fruit. But now.... NOW we have tasted that fruit, my friend. And it is GOOD. My plan is still to buy a final couple of years Focus ST after the lease is up on my TC and then drive it into the ground. Unless Ford give me a reason not to.
