Default what a4ld trans are the same

I have a 91 2.3l with the A4LD transmission with 3 wire hook up. It want go in reverse are 1st. Can drive it in d or od slow take off. I've changed the filter and fluid no luck. I'm thinking of just replacing it wanted to see if anyone would know what cars or trucks would have one that would go right in without trouble. Also what year did the mustang start with this trans.

You need to do about three days research and consider if you can do a diagnosis. The prblems are very common.

Its like the little like the 2.3 carb turbo, darn complicated untill you have all the service information at the ready.

There is lack of info on 1987 to 1993 four cylinder 2.3 transmissions, but for the 1994 to 2000 versions of the A4LD,( the 4R44 and 4R55, its very good). The faults are simple and common, but most of the problems are mis-diagnosed. Most common fault is the EECIV module and its integrted circuits being poorly soldered, causing drive problems which are wrongly attributed to the tranmission. See http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.p...522494#p522494

    and http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.p...528115#p528115

It came out in Europe in 1985 behind the 2.0 liter port EFI engine, but for North America 1987 in the T bird Turbo Coupe 2.3, then the imported Merkur Scorpio. It was always an imported French transmission, based on the old Bourdeux 1974-1987 C3 in anything from 2.0/2.3 Capris and 2.0/2.3 Pintos to xr4ti turbo 2.3 Merkurs. They just redid the control system, and added a lockup clutch and overdrive. Its a very good transmission, but very complicated to delve into because Ford kept changing it for the each application.

It is designed to net work with the 87 to 95 EEC IV, and each year, Ford updated it depending on if it was 105 hp Mustang 2.3 EFI, 150 hp small turbo Tbrid turbo Coupe, or the myriads of Cologne 2.9/4.0 or Vulcan 3.0 Ranger and Explorers from 1990 to 1995. The two years of Scorpio V6's were prety rare. The hot tip for any A4LD is that unless you know the changes for each year, you have to use the transmission wiring and interfacing from the same year, as Ford Dearborn requested many changes which were then done by the French as the gearbox was imported. An extensive post at Serious Explorations on the little Ranger 2.9/Explorer 4.0 found that the A4LD had serveral grounding conventions for the EEC IV hookups depending on year, or if it was CA or High Altitiude states, so it got a little bit hard to tell what each year A4LD got what convention.

You can mix and match, but you have to then look very closely at the grounding voltage for
    a)the lock up clutch and
    b) the overdrive and
    c) the throttle position triming that motivates down and upshifts.

These were controlled by another computer.

Its not a difficult trans, but it can invoke its lockup, o/d and thottle valve softness and firmness in the wrong part of the engines torque curve, and have the little 2.3 laboring its heart out. Its

    d) front pump and
    e) torque converter are not as strong as the C4/C5/AOD/AOD-E/4W70, so it needs proper advice to answer the problems. Most people don't go into a, b and c, and when d and e are not working, the wrong diagonis occurs.

Rebuilding it is exy, as the front pump has to be renewed, and then the converter checked.

The later four and Five speed Explorer transmission fits up, the interchange is total up to 2000, and there is a way to make it work.
