Default What would you do with $25,000.00?

I've been thinking of the costs of doing a major professional restoration of a Fox and I started thinking....... Always a bad thing. If you had $25,000.000 available, no strings attached, would you spend it hotrodding/restoring your Fox or buy a modern performance car. Maybe a used BMW or Subaru WRX etc. etc.

Invest it. I bought 20k in Ford stock when it dropped to $1.25 a share in Nov.08. Now it's at $15 a share. Do the math, i made a good decision.

Well, we don't have room for additional cars. So, I would Coyote/6-speed my Zeph. Finish my "to do" list: tint the windows, coilovers, '06 Bullitt wheels, upgrade the stereo, A/C, and slap a Marquis front end on it. Then, I'd get into some more stuff that's more unrealistic: IRS, have the vinyl upholstery replaced with leather, have a Marquis rear end grafted on and get it repainted. And after all that, I think i'd still have a good amount of money left, so I'd throw a Terminator motor in my Aviator, lower it, and 6-speed that too. Done. haha.

I would not sell my FJ40 (for sale now) and use it to pay off debt. Then build a motor for the capri and do some brake/suspension mods. That would probably take care of it all.

Buy a used Nissan 350z for my wife. Buy the black 1 owner 1980 Cutlass I have my eye on and a crate motor for it, tranny, exhaust, Cragar rims. Replace the top on my 86 vert and maybe buy a coffee with the change!

I'd keep that money rolling by finishing my current project selling it & repeating the process as long as I could. My neighbor did this for years w/o spending any serious out of pocket cash. Of course he started with a REAL 69 ZL1 Camaro...lol

Well I definitely wouldn't sink $25,000 into a Fox. Hell people are having a hard time selling them for anything over $7500.00. That makes putting $25K into one seem a little silly.

Personally I'd probably pay off the mortgage on my vacation home. I only have about $10K left on that mortgage so I'd knock that out. I'd be free of that mortgage payment and have a little coin left over to play with.

I don't really like any of the modern performance cars, I do like a WRX but not enough to buy one and be without a weekend cruiser. So for me personally, I'd go out and buy another 60's Musclecar. If you stay away from Barret-Jackson and Mecum, you can still score a sweet ride for that kind of cash.

I'd pay off my wife's car. Give my two daughter's savings accounts a little boost. The rest I'd spend on my F350, my Mustang, and me.

If I had a $25k lump sum, spending it on a fox wouldn't be my first thought. But for the sake of this discussion, I'd probably do a Coyote swap and a nice paint job.

If you are looking to turn right around and sell it, yes. But if you've noticed these cars are starting to appreciate. In the late 90's/early 2000's a 93 GT could be had for $3,500 in good shape. You want one now and you are looking at $10,000. Check NADA if you don't belive me.

Restore it to factory all original and sit on it for another 10 years.

It should also be understood that sinking money into cars is a loosing proposition most of the time. You'll never get even half your money back on cylinder heads, cams, intakes, etc... I don't spend the money to invest, I spend it because I enjoy doing it and like driving the cars.

    WWHD (What Would Henry Do)?

Put that money to work and double its value! If it was 25 k of land, could you make a 100% gross margin to make it 50 k?

If it were in a bank, and the bank didn't collapse, it could make 5 to 10% interest.

If you were to spend it on your own business to employ, expand and create money with margin, could you make better than 10% gross margin all up each year. Does the use your five talents to make five more?. It the old Private enterprise rulze!

I'd set asside 6 k back in 2005, and about 50 k three years ago to run a Quality Assurance company to make capital.

Doing a job others can, but cheaper and faster with good quality should in theory mean you have market. Its a quality price tradeoff. Or the Model T concept.

Thats what Henry would do. But it took him three goes and three faiures to make it work, and a lot of it was other peoples money.

For me, if modernizing a vehichle can save fuel use and optimize fuel economy and performance, redoing transmissions and induction systems for Fox bodies would in theory be better than doing a whole car modifed for your own desires. The truth is the advances that Ford put into play for 2.3 and 5.0's in 1983 to 1988 were solid performance and economy gains via gearing and induction. The value added improvement by improving the conditon of a tired old Fox body assest is always gonna mortage the farm with no benefit. Waiting untill its at the end of its usable life, and spending 25 k won't yeild revenue. But if you helped a whole bunch of people to improve performance, fuel economy and the quality of the drive, you'd have everyone paying into your modifiactions to fairly stock vehicles. This is in essence what Shelby did in 1962 when starting out doing Cobras and 350/500's, then K car Shelby and finally Mustangs again. He used new vehicles to do it, but those mods you could do yourself. Most people make money on ex factory new vehicles, becasue the cost benfits are best at anew supplier level, where people will pay you to use there stuff.

If you want to make money on old cars, you have to look at the 14 year old thoroughbread, and hop it up with tires, cam, exhast, induction, gearing and suspension. The So Cal hot rot revolution of 1948 was a case of less is more, and the concept of Lets Drop in made money by selling tires, wheels, carbs and kits which were a were for stripped down specials. Somewhere in between is the money, honey. If it is a classic, then even a 40 year old can make money if you can productionize it again. Think over brand new rebuilds of new old stock 67 Shelby Mustangs.

But you have to do your homework. Land and trading for the smart man is a better prospect if your able to. At the very lest, putting it in a bank on interest is the most sensible.

For my money, there are a lot more 1978-1983 Fox body T,B and X code 3.3's around with gutless wheezy 1963 engines and uninspiring non overdrive transmissions which use more fuel than any two 1987 5.0's.

Just a head swap, an overdrive T5 or 4 or 5 speed Explorer AODE or 5R55, and you've turned a 85 to 92 hp clunker into a 200 hp pavement pounder.

See what Terrymwalsh is doing. It used to be done on old Fords, now its being done on old Foxes. 5.0 grunt and economy from a 3.3, with the ability to pick up an under valued 500 dollar T, B or X code Fox, and do a numbers match car which won't suffer the wrath of the Emissions Nazis in most states

I suppose I could do something rational like pay off the new 2013 GT or add to my investments. The house and everything else is paid off so I guess I'd spring for something like this:
