I heard from a guy that if I tint my ttops on my 84 that it could make them crack is this true? Something I have never heard of before, but before I attempted I wanted to be safe. And is the factory tint removable if so how?

It is true- the heat can become trapped between the factory tint on the outside and the aftermarket on the inside. That being said, many, many people have done it with no problem.

The factory tint is within the glass. You will take a chance on cracking the t-tops if you put additional tint on them. Back in the day, we used to cut a peice of cardboard and either paint it or have it covered with fabric for an insert to keep the hot west Texas sun out.

As cheap as I see Mustang T-Tops advertised for sale on Craigslist ($50.00-$75.00/pair all the time) who cars if they crack? The tops are not going to crack immediately and most of the folks on this board used their car sparingly so exposure to the sun should not be a big deal.
At those prices if they crack just buy another set and go on with life!

I've never heard of this nor have I ever seen it. My car had tinted t-tops when I bought it and it has sat outside for the last 6 months without an issue. I picked up a extra set of t-tops for $30 off craigslist so even if they crack I'm not worried about it. Because if this was the case people tinting their factory tinted windows would always have cracked windows.

Mine have been tinted since the 80's by the PO (father-in-law). My car sits outside in Houston and I haven't had any issues other than the slight purpling due to age. I plan to re-tint them when I get the car painted and make it a garage queen. But that's down the road still.
Mines a everyday driver till I can afford a second car. I actually just got a extra set awhile back. But anything can happen so I am probably just gonna try to make shades until I get another daily driver Thanx everyone.

I tinted my sun roof with no problems.
My 85 GT had the T-tops tinted in 87 no cracks.
are the t tops safety glass? I've never seen one break or broken - I just figured they were like side windows and would blow up into a million pieces and not just crack..?
