    Default '79 T-top coupe, turbocharged, and more

    I have a whole bunch going on with this car, so I thought I would start an official build for it.

    I guess you could say that I started current stage of the cars build in this thread;

    http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=139020

    "Looking to "rice" my mustang a little."

    This is how the car currently looks;

    It got too cold to work with the t-top stuff, so I took several weeks off from messing with it. Just been collecting parts. Right now I started pulling the motor apart to do a head and cam swap.

    Got down to the timing chain and discovered a real problem.

    I have never seen anything like this before. Looks like the keyway was not cut far enough rearward in the crank, and the lower timing gear moved. While removing the gear I noticed a lot of crank thrust movement. Measured it to be about .035" so the rest of the motor needs to come out now.

    Good news is the new rims and tires I got for the car. Black 18" Saleen replicas. 9" in front 10" in back. Teaser pic.

    If the crank is damaged I am going to throw a 393 stroker in it. Already have some nice Scat H-beams in the motor. Time will tell.

    Looks like it will be 393", F-303 cam with 1.7rr, heads will be either the ported Windsor Sr.s I had on the motor, or a set of Pro-comp heads I have been tinkering with, rear mount Precision T76 turbo. I'm going to need some bigger injectors.

    Nice man in the brown truck dropped this off today.

    Pistons, rings, and bearings are ordered. I was kinda tempted to just order pistons with less dish to give me about 10.5:1 compression and forget the turbo. 400 to 450 HP would be plenty for street use, I even have a Comp XE282hr sitting on the shelf that would have worked nicely.

    But, I have all the turbo stuff already, and will be able to make more power with better drivability with the turbo. So it stays. I should be able to drop the motor stuff at my machinist by the third week of this month. Then I will need some warmer weather so I can do a complete washing outside without having everything freeze on me.

    Must be Iwas not the only one to have an issue with the keyway on Scats cranks. The new crank is cut for three SBC keyways.

    And no that is not my thumb.

    Heads, valves, stroker crank, pistons, rods, bearings, balancer, flex plate, and rings are at the machine shop as of this afternoon. I need to order new valve springs and a few other bits.

    First notch I've seen with the Cobra R spoiler. Looking forward to seeing it painted in the final colors. I Kinda like the 99 Cobra wheels on there better than the all black Saleens but that just me. Overall a cool project

    A few months ago it wasn't a t-top car. I am waiting for warmer weather to glue the seals down.

    I like the Cobra rims too. But, they are only 8" wide. I wanted more bigger

    I have all my stuff back from the machine shop. I bought a set of 190cc ProComp heads. I really hesitated because of rumors of poor Chinese casting quality, and the whole made in China thing. But for $419 to my door bare, I figured I would take a chance. The finish was quite nice, and they are way lighter than my Windsor Sr.s. I spent about five hours on them, porting and polishing. The had my machinist give them a nice valve job using the valves from my old heads. These heads combined with the stroker set up will give me a compression ratio around 9.2:1. Should work well with the turbo.

    Once we start getting weather consistently above 50 degrees I will start assembling the short block.

    Other interesting parts to be added to the car that I have not mentioned before are;

    a pair of 03-04 cobra front struts

    a 7/8" rear sway bar. The kind that mounts to the frame, not the control arms. I did not have any rear sway bar before.

    a pair of ten way adjustable Strange rear shocks.

    a water and methanol kit to replace my air to air intercooler.

    31 spline axles and matching tracloc.

    Lexan quarter windows that I will be installing NACA scoops in to feed fresh air to the trunk mounted turbo.

    I may be forgetting some other stuff. Basically I'm just waiting for better weather to get started cranking on stuff.

    This kind of stuff made me shy of them for a long time. But I have not seen many issues with the SBF heads. Hopefully mine won't let me down.

    I really don't know what to think about that wing on that car. On one hand I love the cobra R's. ont the other hand I don't like wings on coupes, and on the other hand.... wait I'm out of hands...
    I am very interested to see how it looks once its painted. I'm thinking I may like it more than I want to let myself, kinda gives it an American iron race car look. Are you keeping it blue? BTW Love the new wheels!

    No doubt the car will be a love it or hate it thing. The blue probably will not stay.

    Got a few days of warmer weather. The motor is going together now.

    Mounted the pistons on the rods yesterday. I really hate the spiral locks. Had to install 32 of them. Good thing the work well.
