    I certainly have no idea, and would be really interested in seeing those numbers. I've thought about getting a Marti report for my car, but that would only tell for '79 Zephyrs.

    My car and the yellow Fairmont above both say "ES" on the bucktag. From what I can tell, that's the only official indicator. Here's the decode of my VIN, door tag, buck tag:

    VIN
    9 = 1979 model year
    X = St. Thomas Assembly
    31 = Zephyr 2-dr sedan
    T = 3.3L I6 engine
    604668 = 4,668th 1979 Mercury scheduled for production at St. Thomas Assembly

    Door Tag
    Date - 09-78 = September 1978 scheduled build date
    F0047 = 47 lbs front accessory reserve load
    R0081 = 81 lbs rear accessory reserve load
    Exterior Paint Colors - 1G = Silver Metallic
    DSO - 46 = Twin Cities district sales office
    Body - 66D = Zephyr 2-dr sedan
    VR - [blank] = no vinyl roof
    Int Trim - VA = vinyl seating, low-back front buckets (V), Black interior color (A)
    A/C - A = manual air conditioner
    R - [blank] = no radio
    S - [blank] = no sunroof
    Ax - 8 = 2.73:1 axle ratio, non-locking differential
    Tr - W = C4 automatic transmission
    PP = front springs
    AA = rear springs

    Door Tag
    0716 = rotations #0716
    Z2DR = Zephyr 2-dr sedan
    46 = Twin Cities district sales office
    31
    T604668 = last seven of VIN (decoded above)
    WL = window louver (?)
    FL2
    BG = bumper group (?)
    BK = Black interior (?)
    AC = manual air conditioner
    M2
    ES = ES model/trim level (?)
    1G = Silver Metallic exterior paint color

    Got a couple more to share. This one turned up on Facebook. Pretty sure it's for sale if anyone's interested, I can find the owner.

    Notice the "blackout lower rear panel" goes all the way to the bumper on this car. Both cream colored ones I've seen have been like this!

    It's definitely a different car than the other cream one that dealer had. It has the correct dash trim, and that one didn't.

    Also, 80CougarXR7 found this one at insurance auction.

    Looks nice with tint, but those wheels have to GO.

    Correct dash trim violated by gauges!

    I believe this car now live in the Twin Cities area. I think a guy in Sioux Falls bought it, and then sold it to a guy I know on FB that is local. I guess the floors are junk, but he build some wicked F/Z race cars, so I can't wait to see what he does with it!

    On another note, I was doing a Google image search for "Mercury Zephyr" as I sometimes do to kill time, and ran across this gem.

    As usual, no information about the owner or anything helpful like that. It was on one of those "cars you see on the street" pages, and the post is from 2012. They call it a 1980 model, which would not jive with what I think I know. The Zephyr ES was supposed to be no more for 1980. It's missing the blackout between the taillights, but has many other spotting features. I would really like to see the inside, but no luck. Also odd, it has Fairmont louvers. Maybe it's an early 1980 model where they had run out of Zephyr louvers or something. Who knows. The clear front turn signals would indicate it's a '78. Could be a hodge-podge of parts... Missing emblems on the trunk could indicate a repaint... Regardless, it looks like a dang nice example. I wish I could find out more about it. It's only the second 4-door I've ever come across in the wild.

    Also, I haven't been able to get any more information about how rare these are, but I do have the Marti report for mine, which says it's 1 of 1007. These kind of aren't that helpful for situations like you have with the ES. It tells you mine is 1 of 1007 TWO DOOR ESs for '79. So, that doesn't account for 4 doors, Fairmonts, or the other model years.

    I had the pleasure of seeing this car in person over the weekend.

    You heard right. I actually saw another ES... IN PERSON. Unfortunately mine is still in pieces so they couldn't "meet". And his is pretty far gone. The floors are toast. It's going to be cut up into a race car.
