here is my 84 T-Top with a few pics, I made it my way, all for me with the parts I wanted, check it out
no interior is complete, with out...
Here is some of what I did,
all Ford racing gauges, roll bar is powder coated to match car, Maxum Motor Sport, with a Honda seatbelt bar.
Hurst short throw with hurst leather Hurst T-shifter and boot.
NOS and other switches in ash tray,
rewired the center console computer, took a fog light indicated and used it as my low fuel, replace computer with oil temp and water temp
added gauges on pillar and out on cowl
wheel is 3 spoke
seats have lumbar supports pumps, think SVO, somebody said may Escort seats??
Car originally had darker grey carpet and headliner, I changed to medium.
white gauge overlays
rear seat delete
rear interior mirror from convertible, cause I like the spots that light up interior..
Leather hand brake and leather covered
CD player with charger and wired for IPOD, with remote-too lazy
I am sure I missed something

Currently on one of my 82s: Momo steering wheel, Corbeau GTS II seats, 83-86 instrument cluster with FMS 140 speedo and 85-86 bezel.
^ I saw your post on refinishing that wheel. I'd KILL to have my sport wheel done like that, just the wood to match my wood dash trim. You did a great job on that!

I've been trying to think of a way to get some newer stock looking gauges in the factory locations. Like using the cluster from an 87-93 or sn95 but in the stock locations to retain the old look. I like how the dashes in the '79-86 cars look but I'd just prefer to have some nice backlit gauges that don't cost $800 and aren't meant for racing.

Unfortunately your options will be limited in what will work.
Fitting either of the later model gauges into the dash are possible, but will require major surgery and modifications to work. The 94-04 gauges will require more work than the 87-93 due to computer management and the possibility of PATS system, so do your research before hand. Also keep in mind that you will have to swap out your fuel gauge sending unit in the tank to use any of the 87-04 gauges as they use a different ohms reading for the fuel level than your current sending unit.
The gauges from Dakota Digital are nice option, but as you stated they are in the $750+ range. Lots of features and basically a bolt in option.
4600-
Autometer, Speedhut, Stewart Warner, VDO, etc. are all great options, but even many of those are not backlit and again you are in the @$600-$1,000 range.
Here is one option for you that is a bit less and has a ton of options in regards to styles. They are LED lit, but not backlit to my knowledge.

Here is one that is back lit, but I am not sure on the overall quality of the gauges. Honestly probably as good and accurate at the OEM stuff, but might not be the same quality as Autometer, Speedhut, SW, VDO, etc.

There are other aftermarket gauges out there all with their pros and cons. I would also recommend you seriously consider changing out your current bulbs to quality LED bulbs from Superbrightleds.com https://www.superbrightleds.com/ That alone may make enough of a difference for you to want to keep your stock gauges. Good Luck!

I did do an led bulb swap years ago and am still so happy I did it. With the 194s I was always irritated with how dim they always were, so definitely LEDs helped out a lot. I'm not actively trying to make something work, but I'm kicking the idea around whenever I get a chance to look into it. I like the look of glow shift gauges though. Would love to see pics f anyone has those installed in their fox

I know the flow shift gauges are very decent. They are near me, in NJ. I know a few guys who have used them in their trucks and love them. And my one buddy had a problem w a gauge and they helped him get it figured out. They seem to be decent w customer service too. Just FYI.

Is the speedometer switch plug and play? I have a 82 capri with the 85 MPH speedo and want a 140 MPH. New to this car so still trying to sort out what can work. What year and model would I get one from?
Not a Mustang but in my 83 Turbocoupe I ditched all the factory gauges and made my own textured panels to house some Speedhut and Autometer gauges. I added LEDs for turns and bright light indicators and in the center stack I got rid of the panel that had the lighter, antenna and premium sound switches and put in my own 12v power point and two USB chargers.
Oh, and I Mustang steering wheel.
My cloth seats look to be the same as the Mustang GTs of that era so Im going to get some new 85-86GT covers with the red piping to tie my whole GT Bird theme together.

Thank you. I have been collecting some of these wheels to restore and sell. I have a source to get a working horn button for the center of the wheel too.
Had this done back in the early 90s. Lower door carpet went black and the carpet on the floor went to black also.
Dash is covered with black leatherette also
I never really got around to making my entire vision come together the custom work was just too damn expensive

Had anyone made a mount to put a gauge where the A/C vent is next to the HVAC controls?
