    Default Switching out interior colors

I am doing a complete interior color switch from (Ford color Vaquero) to black.

I am using Flat black Dupli Color Dye/Paint for vinyl. I will post some pic's later today showing the results--all I can say is WOW.

What I did was first I took all my trim out of the car-used a scrub pad and ACETONE to wipe down each piece.

I made damn sure that every nook a cranny on the seats was scrubbed (took the backs off) and broke down the buckets into two pieces. I scrubbed the hell of of the vinyl with the acetone and then shot the seats (two coats) the trim - did the same thing with the scrub pad and the acetone.

The vinyl has to be completely clean of any dirt, armor all etc. I sat all the painted pieces out on a clean tarp in the sun for about a hour then moved them back into the garage...they look factory--very happy with results..

The prep is the secret to getting a good result.....

Not a fan of vaquero? Too bad, it a pretty rare and unique color. Anyway, can't wait to see how it looks, I'm sure it turned out great.

Make sure you use plastic prep , it comes in spray or wipe on with a rag , if you don't it will peel of may be not right away , you can get it from good paint suppler. I don't want you to go all the trouble and have to start over.

I had to dye some of my interior too. Your seat looks great! I'd love to see the whole thing all together!

The interior really looks good I will be using charcoal gray carpet and a black headliner (I did the headliner as well) used a kit purchased at PEP BOYS and believe it or not carpet purchased from LOWES--$19.00 for a 8X 12 piece.. once I have the whole interior done I will post pics..

just finished the door panels and the dash. Will post pictures tomorrow--all I have left to do is the driver seat and the back window trim and the rear seat side panels..

so far I have used six cans of dupli color flat black vinyl dye/paint ($7.39 per can) and one can of acetone.

One thing I have found, when using acetone and scrub pad DO NOT SCRUB HARD it will leave a flat spot on the vinyl and the dye will show a shad lighter than you are using..

changing the interior to black has made a world of difference.....

That dye job looks really good. Did you dye the carpet on the door panels too?

yes id did dye the carpet and I am planning on putting brushed aluminum inserts where the current wood grain panels are. By the way that smudge you see on the bottom right corner of the dash is a result of my big foot rubbing against it as I was installing the headliner--that came out real good I will take some pics of the headliner when I get a chance

Sircrunch - is your method the same as the OP? What products are you using? I just had to repl the heater core in my 1980 Futura but didn't catch it before the carpet got ruined under the evaporator.

Where did you get your carpet? I have a butterscotch color interior, I like what you did.

My old 79 Futura came with a black interior. But I didn't like the wood grain look. So i found the poor mans non-wood grain fairmont instrument cluster panel and tossed that in and used the 85/86 mustang panel above the dash.

For the door panels I taped off the bare aluminum and and spray painted it flat black. It looked really good. Looked natural.

only thing i painted was the plastic stuff. the dash bottom, the column, the console, and all the plastic trim around the roof and the rear side panels... Here's how I did it. I sprayed all the plastic with diluted purple power and scrubbed with a gray scotchbrite pad and rinsed. Then I sprayed it with Transtar brand Adhesion promoter in a spray can. I used SEM vinyl color. the dash pad is new. the carpet is new, the headliner is new. the door panels are new from late model restoration. they do not fit exactly right out of the box, but after a lot of modification they look great. i just recently put my seats back in. from a 93 mustang, recovered them myself! worked out great. here is a pic

Great seeing both of these examples! I was debating on whether to go black or gray and this will help with that decision!! Both look very good, but I'm leaning more towards the look of sircrunch's overall gray, with possibly black accents, such as a black dashpad with the gray.
