Thread: VIN Decoder

    Default VIN Decoder

    A VIN decoder that I have been working on has been duplicated and modified specifically for this 'site. It will decode the following VINs:

    1978-1983 Fairmont
    1978-1983 Zephyr
    1979-1986 Mustang (including SVO)
    1979-1986 Capri
    1980-1988 Thunderbird
    1980-1988 Cougar
    1981-1982 Granada
    1982-1987 Continental
    1983-1986 LTD
    1983-1986 Marquis
    1984-1992 Mark VII

    It may eventually be integrated into this 'site somewhere. I'll leave that up to the 'site admin(s).

    Great news for all early Fox Mustang & Capri fans!

    Here's mine decoded:
    1ME = Mercury vehicle manufactured in USA
    B = active belts
    P = passenger car
    67 = Capri 3-dr hatchback
    B = 3.3L I6 engine
    7 = VIN check digit
    B = 1981 model year
    R = San Jose Assembly (SAP)
    604513 = 504,513th 1981 Mustang scheduled for production at DAP

    It's all correct except that you'll notice it says DAP at the end of the last line, where it should say SAP being a San Jose build.

    Great work from the Fox 'guru'!

    Found another bug with your output:

    604513 = 504,513th 1981 Mustang scheduled for production at SAP
    It should say 4,513th instead of 504,513th. Have to fix that later.

    Fixed that problem. For some reason I didn't have convertible turbo (P27W) codes in there for 1983 and 1984. Don't know how I missed that.

    I have a Cobra in the database with your name on it, don't know if it's the same one you just tried. I'm not finding a Pace Car entry in the database with your name on it.

    Worked good here also.

    Why are there different numbers for the VIN check digit?

  18. #18

    Default

    The VIN check digit is calculated by the other 16 characters in the VIN.

    Check digit can be a number from 0 through 9 or an X.

    Any interest in expanding this decoder to ALL vehicles within the scope of this site? I would a bunch of help with the codes for all of those vehicles.
