88 5.0 Rebuild

Since my 85 is coming along good I decided to start rebuilding my 88 5.0, gonna do as much myself as possible. Including replacing the top myself.

Here is my start.....

Will for sure stay red with black trim and top....I like this Eastwood color...

Great choice of a color. Car looking good so far. Will look outstanding with that color on it.What all you going to do to motor.

Very mild on the 5.0.....if funds allow take the 302 to 306, mild cam, switch to MAS air, AOD will get a shift kit, rear end might get gears.....3.08 in there now.

Floorpans are toast...............this might just be a while before this rebuild happens......floorboards...oh boy..

More bad news.....torque boxes need work......timing chain cover has a crack and the oil pan is shot.....looks like more parts to find and with no garage this might have to wait till next year.

I have a timing cover from an EFI 5.0 Explorer - I think it might be the same as the EFI mustang one. If you want it, let me know! I'll get it to you on the cheap.

Hood/cowl sanded cleaned primed.....


This is the worst of the rust..only part I need a patch panel, got one for $5. Friend will weld for me.


Needless to say, 12 year old top is toast.....

A nice day today on my day off yields progress.....I'm leaving the trim on the doors and in front of the rear tires, they are in very good shape and I see no rust around them.

Sweet ride! If it didn't have the porno red interior, you could do an easy 7-up tribute. Red interior kind of limits your exterior color options...
I think my exterior was originally a darker red than that, judging from the paint in the engine compartment, but when I bought spray bombs (using the code from my trim tag) at Vatozone, the color was more like the outside of yours.
Manual windows are kind of rare in aeros? I've never seen an upper intake that still had that rubber pad - except on a Crown Vic, which is backward). Still has a coil cover too.

Thanks! I'm changing the carpet and seats to black to lessen the porno effect..... I'm the 3rd owner (got her in 2002) after my Pop, he bought it from a gal who ordered it from the factory without power windows/locks no power seats all well. She got everything else, 5.0, AOD, 3:07 rear gear, air cond. It currently has 186,000 miles on her and the 5.0 is untouched.
