Not really. Spray on bedliner didn't exist in 1980. Is this car a time machine of some sort perhaps?

Plus I am curious as to the age of who you called. They are going to have to have a birth date of 1965 or before in order to be aware of what a 1980 Mustang looked like when it left the lot. That would make him 15 in 1980. Maybe 66-67 at the latest.

Thanks for all the replies! Since My Cobra does not have a rear wiper or defrost, I wonder if that is why it does not have one??

I believe someone above described it as similar if not the same material as the spare tire cover. That means it would be easily damaged. Maybe it got wet, maybe someone closed the hatch on top of something that was too tall etc. The later ones were flexible plastic and though they could get scratched, it would be harder for them to deteriorate. Just a guess. Did you buy it in 1979?

the gentleman who owned the Ford dealership is in his 70's he ordered it for his daughter who drove it until she went off to college.

I'm not some kid I'm 54, it doesn't matter to me if you think you know everything there is to know about mustangs but I've requested pictures of the car at the dealership when it was brand new, I tend to believe him..

    btw

polyalkylene glycols were introduced by BASF and Dow Chemical in 1957

There is the million dollar question. I did not buy it new. I have owned it for 26 years. I wish I knew if it had it new.

You said you called the guy who in your words "knows the guy who owned the dealership".......not my words, yours. Not the owner. I am not the one that is worked up over this. You are. I don't care how old you are. You could be 70 but it seems like you this is your first Fox. The hatch is not stock. I am not going to argue about it any longer. It just isn't. I don't know why that bothers you that bad. Have you seen the junk I have? There are a few of them left that are untouched and mine is not one and neither is this one. Why does that matter to you?

If you have holes inside your hatch where the cover would have screwed into then most likely you had one of those covers,no screw holes no cover. I removed the cover from my old 80Cobra and there was about 10-12 screws,I still have those screws but tossed the cover, guess I should have kept it since it appears to be a rare item. I did install a black cover from a 93 in its place.

actually this doesn't mean anything to me at all, I love the texturing, my sub box comes right up against it, if I had the fiberboard it would rattle, this doesn't and really moves the sound..

Hatchbacks with rear wipers or rear defrost had a trim panel to cover the wires. Hatchbacks without either were painted the factory color and had no holes drilled. GT's or vehicles equipped with premium wheels had the McGard decal affixed to the area where the trim panel would otherwise be. Older models had a mica style trim panel. Newer models had a plastic trim piece.

If yours does not have a panel and you have holes around the wiper motor or defrost lines, you are missing this panel.

So mine is red like the exterior, no holes, I am almost 100% positive, I will check tonight, and no rear wiper or defrost. Makes sense, that it covers the wires.

The little bit of rust is in the right spots and the key chain is correct. It is correct that the early cars were just flat board. My 87 gt had this trim also but was of the thicker plastic variety.

I have to agree with homer302. That hatch definitely did not come from ford with the texture like that. Not to say that it may not have been something that was done at a dealership before it was sold. I would have to think it was done later down the line, however, by a previous owner.

Good, keep digging for the truth, whatever it is...

Could this have been part of a dealer added rustproofing package?

I'm not saying it is, but lots of dealers did that back then.

My '79 Pace Car has that fiberboard piece, and rear defrost.

I was always under the impression that if the car came with rear defrost, it had the board to "hide" the wiring.

Cars with the rear wiper got the molded plastic part to cover the wiper motor and arm.

My '80 Cobra that I bought new came without rear wiper and defrost and it does not have any panel on the hatch. It is bare metal hatch.

I should have also mentioned that my 80 with the trim piece does have a rear defrost. My 81 does not have the trim piece and it does not have rear defrost or wiper on it.

79mustangcobra, can you confirm your list of part numbers above? I'm trying to locate a black panel for a 1979 mustang cobra hatch with rear defrost but without rear wipers and the number above (D9ZZ-6146404-B9A -- Liftgate Trim Panel, Black) appears to be for a trim piece for a hatch WITH rear wipers and the color of Vaquero?

    Thanks!
