    Default HELP!!! 1983 GT CONVERTIBLE

I have recently gotten ahold of a 1983 GT Mustang Convertible. I would love some help finding out more bout this car.
    Problems:
I cant find the buck tag
the door tag is old and somewhat unreadable

I have the VIN for the car and would really like to know more about my 83 GT. I Know its one of 1001 (993 US 8 Can).

This is the general buck tag area.

If it is not there and there is no trace of a random screw hole, I would look the entire radiator support over.

If you have a digital camera, you can set it to the macro (generally shows a flower/plant on most cameras) and take a picture of the door tag.
FoxChassis is pretty good at reading faded door tags.

VIN will just be a basic break down year, body style, assembly plant, engine, and 6 digit # of when it was assigned a VIN(not a date, example- 127203= 27,203rd mustang assigned a vin for 198x)

    And, Welcome to FEP!!

1001 is not correct. It is 993 total. (Statistic courtesy of Marti Auto Works.)

The buck tag is screwed to the front face of the core support (frame that the radiator sits in). It is anywhere between the hod latch and the driver-side headlamp. Sometimes it might be behind the bumper cover support bracket ("L" bracket") and or the power steering cooler/line bracket.

Thanks guys for your help. I have searched that front end over high and low and nothing. Is there any other way to get info on the car??? FoMoCo?? Any help would be appreciated as I want to restore this GT back to original looking.

Send me some pics or post some, i got an 83 in my garage and cant compare. I would love to have found another 83 GT Mustang surviving. Many hints to prove its real. I need interior pics too. 2X on Foxchassis, 993 is the number, we all used to think the magical 1001..but that is not correct.. the correct number according to Marti..993

From the pics in your album, all I can see indicates that she is a real 83GT!! All of the tell tale signs are there.. buck tag on mine was right where the pics show. It is down low and you really have to look, I dont think you can see it with the radiator in the way, you really have to look.

I accqired the car from my Brother in law and he swore to me that it was the real deal, that is why he had bought it. But since he had this he came across a heck of a deal on a 70 chevelle that was in his family since new with low low miles on it. He didnt want this anymore so i jumped on it..gonna be a fun car i can feel it

I pm'ed you to email me the pics, I think she is the real deal from what I can tell so far. Once I get the pics, I will give you my opinion, the only real way is buck tag. We can verify build dates and plants and narrow the time frame that it was built but the best way is that buck tag.

Are the 83 GT's called "black magic"????

  13. #13

    Default

    No.

That is a very common error on the "build sheets" provided by Ford's Customer Relationship Center.

Black Magic was an option for Capris from 81 through '83.

Welcome to FEP. Sounds like you have an interesting car with an interesting "family" history.

Welcome to FEP! Nice Save! Now that you found the Buck tag I would recommend you make a post in the decoding section requesting Foxchassis to decode the car. Go ahead and take a picture of the Door tag up close. Computers let you do magical things to pictures to see things the eye cannot.

Great find on a rare car, congrats. Have fun bringing her back to its former glory. That is one of the most important fox mustangs ever made (in my opinion). Welcome to the site, and please keep us posted on any progress you make...very awesome car!
    Cheers!
