    Good to see you over here. I was the same guy at AFM that asked you about the door and buck tags.

    It is a Pace Car. The VIN is one sure indication...only the Pace Car's unit numbers begin with "48". Plus the car has the correct body parts and sunroof, and I can see the original Pewter Metallic paint on the firewall.

    You asked about the door tags? What is that for?

    I have a database of '79-'86 Capris and Mustangs...thousands of VINs, door tags, and buck tags entered so far. Plus I also decode them when they are posted.

    okay so the door tag would just be more assurance that its a pace car?
    just wondering if you had ever decoded the vin i gave you, because i cant find any history on it since it was pre 1981.

    Yes, there are two specific codes on the door tag that are Pace Car-only...

    Exterior Paint Colors = 1E (Pewter Metallic)
    Int Trim = UA (Black interior w/ cloth & vinyl Recaro seating)

    Also, even though the sunroof was standard equipment on the Pace Car, there is no "S" (sunroof) code on the door tag.

    I decoded your VIN in the thread at AFM (post #7) but here it is again...

    9 = 1979 model year
    R = San Jose Assembly
    03 = Mustang hatchback
    F = 5.0L engine
    481575 = 1,575th 1979 Pace Car scheduled for production at San Jose Assembly

    Welcome to FEP. I found a build sheet in my 1979 Ghia (FoxChassis already has the info and decoded). Thought it might be yours, but it isn't.

    Congrats on the Pace Car, that has to be a nice surprise. Have you thought about what you are going to do with it? Restore back to Pace Car looks, keep it the way it is, etc? I also have a San Jose built Pace Car, it's nice to have another one on the site. Welcome and if you have any questions, this is definitely the place to ask. We have some very knowledgable people that are always willing to help.
    Cheers!
