    Default Vinyl dye/paint and your car upholstery

    Has anyone used vinyl paint/dye to change the color of their car interior (what brand)?

    My interior is a maroon and I want to change it over to Black. Question is the vinyl paint how reliable is it and what type should I use GLOSS or MATT or SATIN??

    SEM is the way to go. If you're painting the interior, the surfaces have a slight shine to them (some more than others), so you would want to use a semi gloss or satin finish paint/dye.

    I get my vinyl prep and paint at CJ Pony. they have the exact colors
    for our car

    If you have a compressor and spray gun, I prefer using the quart sizes when doing a complete interior. You have less chance of color issues when using a quart size rather than several cans.

    Thats a good idea Trey. BTW where do you buy the quarts and what do they cost? Also would a quart do all interior panels plus dash?

    You can generally buy quarts of SEM paints at the same suppliers that have the spray cans. You can also have the interior and trim paints mixed by most of your regular paint suppliers, this include Dupont, PPG, BASF, Sikkens, etc. and many others.

    As for the amount of paint needed, that can depend on several things. Generally for many Mustangs/Capris a quart will do the entire interior if you are just doing a repaint/redye of the exisiting color.

    When you do a color change, the amount of paint required can change dramatically. Going from a light color to a darker color is usally easy and again about a quart. Going the opposite way can double the amount of paint in some cases. IMHO the hardest color change is red to gray or tan for most Mustangs/Capri. The red tends to bleed through all colors except for black. I generally recommend a good grey primer coat in these cases to help save time, paint, and aggrevation.

    In truth the same can be said for painting red over any other color too. The red tends to not hide well and can take several coats to get good coverage. So again in this case, you can easily be at 2 quarts of color without too much trouble.

    Thanks for all the input,""BLACK SATIN"" is what I will use and I will try and find a SEM product dealer in my area (San Antonio Tx). Again. thanks to all you guys for your help..

    I used Duplicolor. It looked good but scratches off if your not careful.

    This can happen with any of the paints really.

    I personally like to use an adhesion promoter on all of my interior work. IMHO, the AP helps to prevent the scratches, improves overall adhesion of the new paint/dye, and helps to eliminate any fisheyes or other reactions that are quite common due to interior car care products such as Armor All, etc.

    I generally use the BullDog brand of AP, SEM has their own too that works well, as do most paint suppliers.

    What do you guys recommend for fabric upholstery that needs touched up?
    The black fabric (not leather or vinyl) interior in my turbo coupe has faded to blue where the sun has shined on it over the years.

    I used the duplicolor on my headliner and it stiffened it up and made it sag

    I spent an enormous amount of time and money changing my old 86 from tan to black and my brothers 86 red to black...and learned quite a few things.
    unless your interior is so thrashed that it needs to b gutted and redone..a color change nearly always winds up in a half done project with scratches and a look that is still easily identified as sprayed. The factory used paint on the interiors and can be done right...the four eyed dashes were all paintes T the factory....however id never use paint in a high traffic area..this means u will want oem black kick panels door panels arm rests and so on...

    my suggestion is to consider a restoration of the original color..or source out a 100% grey interior from a donor vehicle

    A color change on your interior should be approached much the same way you would a color change for the exterior. All of your panels need to be scuffed, primered and painted. If done correctly, you shouldn't have a problem with paints chipping or flaking off. While the aerosol cans are convenient, they are not the end all for your car to stand up to any wear and tear.
    As far as the vinyls on your door panels are concerned, I would recover when possible versus dying them.

    I used Duplicolor on my dash, but I didn't like the feel of it. I used a fine sand sponge on it to remove the roughness then and re sprayed it with SEM low luster clear coat. The dash now looks like new.
