Default Fuel Pump, Tank for 78-81 F/Z and 78-86 Wagon

I hope this will answer a lot of questions; the pictures should be worth a small book. The fuel tank is a Spectra F2C which is for an 83-86 LTD wagon; the fuel pump/sender is the matching Ford unit which is compatible with all non-digital fuel gauges from 78-86. The stock E4DF fuel pump is a "feeder" which pumps to a high-pressure pump outside the tank. The replacement fuel pump is a Bosch unit which is stock for an '89 Mustang 5.0; I chose the Bosch for quiet operation, greater than factory flow (although less than the Walbro, but my HP goals are modest), the rubber adapter hose included and the ability to "clock" the pickup filter in any direction needed. The Walbro has some of these features but I wasn't sure about the adapter hose and the ones I've played with have been a little louder.

Here is the pump/sender assembly with part number E4DF 9H307 BD:

Here is what it looks like, internally, mounted (stock form):

Here are the stock fuel pump and the Bosch side-by-side with the adapter:

Here are two pics of internal with the Bosch pump (sideways, sorry):

And this is how it fits with the lock ring locked:

Note that this assembly does _NOT_ fit the 16C tank used on '82-86 cars. I don't have a part number for them; they will be about 2" shorter.

As for fuel lines, I will be bending my own when I do all the brake lines. I will be using the nylon "replacement" sections at the ends for fuel filter, tank/return connections, etc., so I can keep the Ford quick connects.

Last thought: beware of digital dash senders. They look the same but they are 266-80 ohms resistance instead of 73-10 ohm; your gauge will always read full (or empty? I'm too lazy to check). **Note: According to my '88 Ford Factory Service Manual set, the 1988 Mustang still used a 10-73 ohm (claimed 8-86 ohm but 10-73 is within tolerance) level sender so this setup should work with Mustang or T'bird (non-electronic) dash swaps. YMMV and I don't know when they swapped to another resistance sender...

    Any questions?

The part number for the Bosch pump is 69124 and it fits EFI mustangs from 1985 to 1997. I got mine online for $95 at Parts America, which is Advance Auto/Kragen/Checker and others. The sock is 68025 and runs $4.88.

There are others out there and many of their pics show the same adapter hose. I'm sure you could get a stock style pump for less, even if you had to use your own hose, but I don't know how much horsepower a stock pump will feed.

Thanks for posting this. If I read this right I use my existing F2 gas tank in my '79 Zephyr. Order the E4DF 9H307 BD sending unit instead of the stock one out of my '89 Mustang 5.0 and make my own lines?

You need the F2C tank to use the pump/sender shown in the earlier post. You need to modify that unit by removing its low pressure pump and replacing with a high pressure pump (as used on a SEFI Mustang).

This tank is no longer available, correct?
I checked rockauto.com and the tanks they show for an LTD look nothing like my stock tank. Or are they completely different?

You are probably looking up the wrong LTD. Make sure you are looking up the mid-sized 'Fox' LTD.

    What year/body do you have?

OK I just went to the Rockauto site and their LTD listing is WRONG. They are listing the full sized tanks under the mid-sized listing. Usually Rockauto is good but this time their database is incorrect. You can still look it up on Rockauto just seach under 83-86 MARQUIS instead of LTD. It will come up correctly with the F2C and F16B series tanks for EFI/CFI applications. $56 for the F2C is actually much less than they were just a few years ago.

Beleive it or not, I actually found one on Amazon.com. $50 and free shipping, couldn't pass that up. I also just got an Airtex pump/sender assembly (#E2146S) from Advance Auto for $73. It was $103 but I got $30 off by using code A123.

    Bungy,
Glad you found one and that is a very good price. When your F2C comes in can you please measure the opening in the tank for the filler pipe.

No problem. I planned on doing a side by side comparison and taking pictures and measurements. I'll post everything on here.

I got my new tank yesterday (F2C) but I can't do a side by side comparison as I can't get the old tank out. (see link below) I did measure the filler opening and it's 2 1/4" My old tank filler tube is 2" in diameter. With the rubber grommet taking up about an 1/8" around it, that would make my old opening 2 1/4" also. Maybe????? I'm pretty sure on that. Also my filler tube is held in with 4 bolts. Door tag reads May 1980.

Opening on the F2C should be 2-1/4" diameter (as you measured).

How did you measure your filler pipe?

The early (Fairmont) filler pipe uses a 4 bolt mounting. The later (LTD) filler pipe used a 3 bolt mounting (and matching filler housing).

I just held a tape measure up to it and "eye-balled" the outside diameter. I'll get a much more accurate reading on things once I get the tank out. I'm 99% sure it's 2" OD.

Where do you get that fuel pump sending unit? If I go to the parts store and ask for an LTD sender do they still have them?

    Thanks!

You should be able to get one at AdvanceAuto. Just ask for Airtex part number E2146S. Here's a couple I found online.

At $60-something shipped it's still cheaper than the gas inside.

The tank for my '65 Volvo is still available from Volvo. $375 + shipping from Sweden.
I used sealer on mine. It worked, but there's about a half-gallon of solidified goo out of a 10 gallon capacity now. Plus the parts cut out to add an in-tank electric pump, because I didn't trust the tank to hold together if we sumped it for an external pump.

Comparatively, we've got it good on the F/Z front!

Sorry if this is going to be a dumb question, but I'm looking to get a F/Z and hopefully a sport coupe. If I'm reading all of this information correctly, F/Z's us the same gas tank configuration as the '83-'86 LTD/Marquis wagon. Is that correct?
