Haha - the world's worst picture is somewhat intentional - but you can see the flares
Best way to make sure they are in good hands, IMO, is to make sure they are in mine! So this one will be coming to Texas

Here she is, guys - the Mirage, by Summit Ford. There's some neat history on this car already, but we've got more digging to do. It's an '83, 5.0 T-Top car with one of the ford M81 body kits. You can see the candy paint fade job, which is 95% intact and is all original. No body damage, and no rust. There's a good chance it has just 34k miles, especially given paint condition. Haven't had a chance to dig into what motor mods it might have as Summit was building pretty highly modified motors in 83 if a customer requested it. The wheels are also suspect, but KMC was started in '82 - although it's hard for me to believe this type of design was around in early 83. I also suspect that the car was commissioned to be built after the event with the M81 and Motorsport giveaway car - as both of those had the same body kit. Lots and lots left to learn, but that's the fun part. Special thanks to Dan and his super supportive family for going to look at the car with me on a whim, and for picking it up for me. Can't wait to get it down to Texas!

Alright Chris, two demands: 1. We need a view of the rear end/spoiler to show off "Mirage" and 2. How & where did you find such a unique car?

Here's the wing.
Believe it or not - I posted a wanted ad on craigslist describing the car as best we knew it. Within a few days, I got a call from someone who knew where the car was. After a year of trying to convince them to take me to the car, they gave me the number of the owner (while we were there for the MCA show). The car had been owned by this family since it was just a couple of years old and they were getting worried about it's well being where they were at. They had interest to find a new home for the car, we struck a deal a couple days later when I got back to Austin.

Whoa! I wasn't quite expecting that and honestly not sure if I was ready yet.
It will definitely be a conversation starter so be prepared. I'm not sure if it is the pinstriping on the rear quarters or the sidepipes, but it is just a wee bit busy. I guess being an early 80's product, some of the design cues were left over from the 70's.
Very unique car and a cool piece of history there so hopefully you can get its roots traced out and documented because it has a lot to say. Hoping I get a chance to see this one in person some day Chris.

I thought the exact same thing about Corvette Summer!Originally Posted by GT 350
I agree - it's a bit busy, but definitely a '70s style custom and that's what makes it cool. Those quarter panel touches look to be airbrushed on. I'm definitely looking forward to finding more history!Originally Posted by 84StangSVT

So...wonder if johnnyj (the OP) is still around 5 years later to see this thing discovered?! Also going out on a limb, but guessing those wheels
and tire sizes aren't original to the package? Then again it was the 80's and jacking your ride up was the thing to do I know most hate the wheels, but for some reason I feel like a set of Turbines would look killer on that car!

I am thinking those wheels and tires came in the package that included the side pipes!
I really hope Chris can come up with some vintage pictures of this car so we can see what it looked like back in the day, hopefully while at Summit Ford.

I totally agree on the turbines! That is on the list of possibilities. If I can find a set of original M81 BBS wheels that would be ideal, otherwise there are some new companies doing custom 3 piece meshies I might use. Same for the tire sizes - will go lower profile and get it to set level.
I hope I can as well - I've got a picture of it from the '90s or so, but it looks exactly the same. I'd like to track down the original owner and see what I can verify.Originally Posted by 83GTJIM

The "jacked" rear reminds me of my friend 69 firebird in high school. . Personally the side pipes not a fan of except for a couple of cars, one being the cobra. The spoiler I think is ok if rear end was lower. Just my thoughts. Still a killer find.

Great find. Congrats. Cool looking car, in a 70's - 80's sort of way. Glad to see it is now in good hands. Hope to see it in the future.... it would be a great participant in a MCA show.

Congrats on the purchase. Pretty neat story on how you were able to track it down. I really like it. I hope you find the original owner and some period pictures of it as well. All part of the fun. Thanks for sharing the pics of it.
