    Default Trans tag decode?

    This is the mystery trans out in my 83 Black Magic Capri. It might be the original, but since it was hooked to a 351 it might be different than stock.

    Thankfully, the trans tag is still riveted on.

    Can you decode the tag for me Mick? Would be much appreciated.

    And since my car is within the first 1000 vins for the '83 model year, wouldn't my Black Magic have had a 4spd?

    Thanks!

    It's held on by one of the servo cover bolts. Lots of them get removed and lost.

    He's gonna want a picture of the build sheet for his database. You guys might as well post pictures of the door tag and the buck tag, too, if you have them.

    Would these same numbers above on a RUG tag, but with a date code of

    JB30 be October 30 1981? Not sure if A=80, B=81 C=82 ?

    See what happens when a person makes an assumption? Oooops.
    Is there a vin number on these transmissions like is stamped on the engine block? Looking but I don't see one a vin stamp.

    Also, is J on the engine block also September, or is it October? I made another assumption that J being the 10th in the alphabet was october

    Block date stamp date: 2J22

    There should be a partial VIN (last six characters?) on the transmission. Check the sides of the main case in the area that it attaches to the clutch housing.

    The letters I and O are not used in date codes...
    A = January (1st year)
    B = February (1st year)
    C = March (1st year)
    D = April (1st year)
    E = May (1st year)
    F = June (1st year)
    G = July (1st year)
    H = August (1st year)
    I = not used
    J = September (1st year)
    K = October (1st year)
    L = November (1st year)
    M = December (1st year)
    N = January (2nd year)
    O = not used
    P = February (2nd year)
    Q = March (2nd year)
    R = April (2nd year)
    S = May (2nd year)
    T = June (2nd year)
    U = July (2nd year)
    V = August (2nd year)
    W = September (2nd year)
    X = October (2nd year)
    Y = November (2nd year)
    Z = December (2nd year)

    You will never see N through Z on date coded parts. The "2nd year" codes were for vehicles where codes were used instead of actual dates AND the model year was longer than 12 months.. Think 1965 Mustang production that went from March 1964 through August 1965. Production was in two Marches, two Aprils, two Mays, two Junes, two Julys, and two Augusts.

    The letter I was not used so as not to be confused as the number 1. The letter O was not used so as not to be confused as the number 0.

    In VINs the letters I, O, Q, and Z were not used. The letter Q could be confused as the number 0. The letter Z could be confused as the number 2.
