Default More than "just a six"

I am currently putting a new engine in my '83 GLX.

    It is a 3.8 stroked + poked to 4.3L that came from a 1989 "Supercoupe" T-Bird

    Some of it's features are
Girdle on the mains, with ARP studs, 4.2 F 150 crank, wiseco pistons and 351 h-beam rods.
Heads have been ported, larger valves, springs, and roller rockers, ARP stud kit as well.
Static compression is 9.5:1 Cam specs to follow (as soon as I find my cam card)
I have also procured a MASSIVE (compared to stock) intercooler and am in the process of designing a less restricted airpath from the S/C to the intake.

    Pictures coming soon.

Seems like the supercharged 3.8 could be fun to play with. I recently read some of the Thunderbird brochures, and it looked like the supercharged engine is sort of like an aluminum-headed six cylinder version of the 5.0 HO, with forged pistons and roller lifters. I want one.

Seems like no one ever does anything with the 3.8L. This could be a really cool project with awesome results!

Sounds cool. I always thought this would have been a good swap as the stock engine would perform better in a lighter car. This modified one would be even better.

I saw this setup in a 86 GT a few years ago. It was a stock SC engine. The owner said the hardest part was the electrical.

The one thing to prepare for this, was to get a donor car, and pull the WHOLE wire harness from the car, and using that as a starting point for the swap. Since my 1983GLX was a "pre-puter" car I took the engine management harness and "wire by wire" extended it 3 feet to mount the CPU behind the radio on the tunnel (as the normal kick panel area was too small to mount the CPU). A good point to mention here is if you have a buddy with an "ALLDATA" account get the CPU wire callouts as a guide to powering up the engine management harness.

At this point, why didn't you just choose to go with an aftermarket ECU set up?

Something to do with your emissions testing, I assume?

What are you planning on using for tuning?

The reason I am going with a stock ECU is I want to demonstrate how far a 3.8 can go with MOSTLY stock Ford parts (for instance my rods are forged 351 pieces, pistons are custom, yet crank is stock 4.2).

As far as tuning, I will purchase a "Quaterhorse" tuning program, it tunes plus has a data logger to analyze it in a "realtime" situation without having a tuner pro riding shotgun to watch the screen.

I'm familiar with QH. I just figured you had to have something in the mix to tune with.

My next door neighbor has a mustang six he turbo'd. He is getting somewhere around 400 hp out of it. I think he has a website with some of the info on it- if you are interested, I can find out his web address. Pretty neat idea, I think.

Just tried looking- website is gotstang.com- miserable site to navigate.

Subscribing. I bet a stock 4.6 "Terminator" blower would be a nice upgrade from the stock Super coupe blower.

I always wanted to turbocharge one of these Super Coupe motors.

    Progress so far: Engine assembly:

    and oil pan issue:

and the places it needs adjustment are the casting reinforcements that are close to the girdle, and two clearence holes have to be made at the number one main bearing cap nuts as shown by the two black dots shown on here:

    steady progress though.

Those are stock supercoupe pieces that have had the factory finish removed and re-painted "60's Ford Blue" with the raised areas and Ford script left in the raw aluminum just for "bling". lol

    Stay tuned,

I put on the A/C-Jackshaft casting and P/S-Alternator casting tonite . I found my one S/C blowers filled with oil where it isn't supposed to be, and the other S/C with no spring damper. So I switched them and now I have a oil-tite blower with damper.

I was also giving my 9 1/2 year old daughter "Supercharger 101" how it works , what the pieces do etc. she will be an interesting girl if she retains what she has learned so far. (she watches me WAYYY to close sometimes it scares me lol.)
