On my '79 4-dr, the grommet is bad and has been leaking for about a week now. Thought about dropping the tank, cutting about an 1" out of the filler pipe, welding a stub to the tank, then splice the neck back with a silicone coupler.
Thoughts?

Didn't think new ones were available. Do you have a link for them?

You should be able to find one new (NOS). Try the following:
1. Call/visit local Ford dealer. They should be able to look upthe part number. Tell them the core number for the part is 9072. Even if they cant get it they have a locator that searches all dealer inventory.
2. Call Green Sales. They stock tons of NOS obsolete Ford parts. They will also look up the part number for you if they dont have it.

I found one at a local Ford dealer here in Ohio a couple years ago. Green Sales also shows 16 in stock. The part number was E1AZ-9072-B.
It worked on my 78. Think it was around $10.

Gotta get one from the dealer.
We just recently got one.
If you modify the inlet tube design, you will mess up the air flow when filling your car with gas, and it will take you forever to fuel up.
FWIW:
There are 2 versions for these cars.
My son's original gas tank filler tube on his carb'd 81 Fairmont was slightly larger in tube diameter than the later LTD2 EFI fuel tank that we just recently put in. It is only like 1/8" difference, but it is enough that they will NEVER interchange.
I have no idea if it was a year change or the difference was between EFI and carb, but just a heads up for those of you thinking about these things.
Mine has the 2-1/4" neck.

I know this is an ancient thread/post, but this is one that came up as I was trying to figure out what seal I needed for my '82 Zephyr gas tank. LMR still offers those seals that DeraldRice posted, and I ordered one of the 9072A ones (which, from what I've determined, meant it would be the smaller diameter version). I also found the Ford part by inputting my vehicle information on fordpartsgiant.com (presumably one could do the same on other Ford parts websites) and ordered a seal from them. What I received from fordpartsgiant.com is F4ZZ-9072-DA, which you will find listed for all sorts of FoMoCo vehicles - Mustangs, Town Cars, F/Zs, trucks, etc etc.
As far as I can tell (by visual inspection and vernier caliper), the reproduction LMR seal and the OE Ford seal are identical. I'm not sure what prompted TWR2003's comment that the LMR seals are not correct for a Fairmont, but it would appear that his comment was incorrect. The LMR seal is installed on the tank now, since I received that one first. It'll be a week or two before the tank goes back in the car and actually gets filled with gas, so maybe at that point I'll find that the LMR seal doesn't work, but I don't see how that could be the case since it's the same as the OE Ford part.

I'm sure that's to make it fit tight.

These grommets used to be dealer only. Now they are avaiable aftermarket.

Do not use lubricant to install the seal into the tank. After it is installed in the tank coat the lip that will seal on the pipe with clean engine oil. You can also lightly coat the outside of the pipe (the portion that is inside the tank). Do NOT use any other type of lubricant.
Good luck

Did the dealer verify that was the correct part number (E1AZ-9072-B) for your 79 Fairmont or did you just ask them to order that number?
Thanks
