    Default Filler neck grommet

On my '79 4-dr, the grommet is bad and has been leaking for about a week now. Thought about dropping the tank, cutting about an 1" out of the filler pipe, welding a stub to the tank, then splice the neck back with a silicone coupler.

    Thoughts?

Didn't think new ones were available. Do you have a link for them?

You should be able to find one new (NOS). Try the following:

    1. Call/visit local Ford dealer. They should be able to look upthe part number. Tell them the core number for the part is 9072. Even if they cant get it they have a locator that searches all dealer inventory.

    2. Call Green Sales. They stock tons of NOS obsolete Ford parts. They will also look up the part number for you if they dont have it.

I found one at a local Ford dealer here in Ohio a couple years ago. Green Sales also shows 16 in stock. The part number was E1AZ-9072-B.

Gotta get one from the dealer.
    We just recently got one.

If you modify the inlet tube design, you will mess up the air flow when filling your car with gas, and it will take you forever to fuel up.

IF that is the correct number it should be easy to find one. Have the dealer double check the pn based on your car's info.

It worked on my 78. Think it was around $10.

    FWIW:
There are 2 versions for these cars.

My son's original gas tank filler tube on his carb'd 81 Fairmont was slightly larger in tube diameter than the later LTD2 EFI fuel tank that we just recently put in. It is only like 1/8" difference, but it is enough that they will NEVER interchange.

I have no idea if it was a year change or the difference was between EFI and carb, but just a heads up for those of you thinking about these things.

The seal with part# E1AZ-9072-B that I used on my 78 had a 2-1/8 I.D. for the filler tube. The other seal I have from a 82 Fairmont has has a 1-7/8 I.D. Never saw one at 2-1/4 I.D. Your best bet is have a Dealer check for what you need.

These grommets used to be dealer only. Now they are avaiable aftermarket.

The seal expands to fit the filler pipe.

Those Mustang filler neck seals are not correct for Fairmont

Do not use lubricant to install the seal into the tank. After it is installed in the tank coat the lip that will seal on the pipe with clean engine oil. You can also lightly coat the outside of the pipe (the portion that is inside the tank). Do NOT use any other type of lubricant.

    Good luck

Did the dealer verify that was the correct part number (E1AZ-9072-B) for your 79 Fairmont or did you just ask them to order that number?

    Thanks

We destroyed the one on our 24 hours of Lemons Futura so we took it to the local deal parts department and bought the closest thing they had, which was the Mustang part. The hole for the filler neck was smaller, but the outside part was about right. I cut the inner part until the filler next would go through it, then put some adhesive on the parts that would contact metal. It doesn't leak, though I'm not so sure I could get it out without destroying it.

When we did ours, we looked up directions somewhere that said to use petroleum jelly on them.

It's been a few months, so I don't recall the source of the info.

The new seal is in and fit great. Old one had D8AC-9072-AA. I guess the new one superceded the old part number.
