Default Rack & Pinion 1986 Mustang?

So, I got the car inspected last week or so and I was told I need to replace my rack & pinion and to tighten a wheel hub up. What is all entailed with a rack and pinion swap? Any opinions on brands or upgrading in the process of replacement or anything? I am clueless here.

Not really that difficult. You will get new inner tie rods with an Atsco rack (Autozone). I put one of those on my 84 many ears and miles ago and it is still working fine. It should also come with new bushings. You also want new fluid. Remove the tie rod ends counting the turns so that you can put them back at about the same spot with the new rack. I would also invest in a set of line wrenches if you do not have those. Once you have everything back together, you need to air bleed the rack. Fill the pump with fluid, then turn the rack from lock to lock at least six times, taking care to keep the pump covered with fluid. Then take it to an alignment shop.

If you are looking to upgrade, I would go with an SN95 rack. The topic has been covered, so just search it. Best rack is 2000 Cobra R followed by 03 Mach 1.
