I'm running a stock 89 short block, with Twisted Wedge 170's, and a Comp XE266HR cam in my 82 Capri. I had lots of PTV clearance and it runs outstanding. Gobs of power, excellent drivabuility. I would highly recommond it!

I am not speaking from experience but it is funny that nobody suggested the Trick flow cams with their own heads. One would think they they would do testing to optimize their cams with their heads. Any opinions?

    Default TRICK FLOW

Hello boys, I LOVE my TRICK FLOWs ...... but I run the stage II in 1 motor and the stage III in the other ! you will not have enough PTV with either of these w/o flycutting thats why I'm not speaking for the stage I ..... The stage II is AWESOME runs hard to the 6250 limiter in my injected car and the III is in my carbed car it lacks low end but spins HARD from 5000 to 7100 where it makes peak power with it in 2 degrees retarded ! my .02$ Keith

no one likes a single pattern with those heads???

the op never told us what he planned on doing with the car, and we know very little about his combo.

    Thumbs up

    My first reply here...

I just finished building a 347 with 170,s and their stage 2 cam. Car is a beast! But, it's all about money and your ultimate goals. If you are going to have PTV clearance issues, go with the Comp cam. I went with the stage 2 because of the price and the fact that my engine was built to handle the extra lift. I don't drive my car much and I am not racing, so I didn't have but one goal and that was a good running engine with a great sound. I agree with abad82RS...I love this cam! Good price, good sound and pulls hard to 6500.

I run the TFS heads also, my pistons are notched (TRW forgings cut By D.S.S). I use the Lunati 292* / 0.512" cam. I love this combo, sounds great, flat torque curve, and good HP also for a dependable combo.

With that being said, ANYTIME you change cams or heads, do yourself a favor and check the actual piston to valve clearance.

The absolute best cam would be a custom grind.

There is no such thing as a "best cam" for a specific set of heads. Each and every single engine combination has an ideal cam and it depends on more than just what's between the shock towers.
    What transmission do you have?
What is your diff. gear ratio?
What is your planned usage for this vehicle?
And why are you so adamant about not flycutting the pistons???

If you don't want to flycut the pistons, run a stock roller cam with 1.72 rockers. These babies have made over 350-400hp at the crank with upgraded top ends. Give us some more information, and the more knowledgeable folks may give you some insight and guidance rather than "yeah I use it and it's great!". No offense to some.

I'm no engine builder expert or cam expert, but i don't really like single pattern cams for any heads especially Ford heads. The exhaust side is always lacking on Ford heads, so split pattern cams really help.

For all SBF heads, doesn't matter the make. Single pattern cams just don't cut it.

ajhutson, the lift has a very small amount to do with ptv problems. Its the duration of the cam were you will run into trouble. For example my cam has over .560 lift and it clears.

AJHutson, since you are pretty down on CR with the combo a very good and affordable choice is the TFS Stage 1. If you want to beef it up a little add 1.72 ratio rockers. When you buy the TFS heads don't go with those having 3/8" rocker studs but go directly to the Track Heat heads with 7/16" rocker studs (TFS-51400010), and choose the rocker arms accordingly (TFS-51400520 for 1.6 and TFS51400521 for 1.72). Always measure piston to valve clearance, although you should easily be safe with both the rocker arm ratios with that cam.

What comes to single pattern cams they do perform pretty well on the 5.0 or stroked 5.0 with good heads. With AFR or TFS heads I would not hesitate using single pattern cams as they have decent exhaust flow. For example a 327 did well with AFR185 heads and Comp Cams Magnum 230/230 .598/.598 cam, 10.3 CR and dual plane intake at 440hp at 6400rpms. The Magnum cams make nice power and they sound mean. Some newest engines we are building are with TFS 205cc CNC heads and single pattern mech roller, or even a dual pattern cam (intake slightly less) with 1.72/1.6 mixed rockers so that it actually favours the intake.

I ran a 357 with Victor Jr heads and a single pattern cam, the same 230/230 .598" Comp Cams roller cam you mention at around 9.8:1 compression with a heavily ported Victor Jr. Car ran like a bull, not the best low end but it pulled to 6500. But, in my opinion, the cam was nowhere near ideal. It had 12" of vacuum and didn't work well with my 3.55 gears. I wound up going with a Comp XE274HR (224/232 .555/.565) and added a 76mm turbo in a customers car and it spat out 640hp @ 5900 (running out of fuel) and 715lb ft of torque at only 10.5lbs of boost.
It's all about combination, folks. There is no cookie cutter recipe to make power. And 9 times out of 10 I will recommend a split pattern cam for my customers, not just for peak power but for having a solid POWERBAND!!!

Don't get me wrong, single pattern cams work, but i think they leave some on the table. I'm anxious to get my car back on the dyno. The numbers in my sig were with a Stealth intake and X303 cam, now it's running a Victor Jr. and AFM n-91 cam. The difference was crazy and it'll rev to 7500rpm with stock replacement Ford Racing lifters.
