Well, I'm sure FoxChassis will jump in on this one, but here's my attempt at it:

    VIN: 9F05F279866 - 1979; Dearborn, MI; 5.0-liter V8 302/2V; 3-DR Hatchback MACH I; 179,866th vehicle assembled at the Dearborn plant
F0030 - 30 lbs front accessory reserve load
R0000 - 0 lbs rear accessory reserve load
ext. paint- 1G - Silver Metallic
    DSO-17 - Washington
body: 61H - 3-DR Hatchback MACH I (my book shows this code as a 3-DR Fastback Ghia for a Capri)
    mldg: 73P -
    int. trim: SA -
    a/c: A - Air Conditioner
    R: 2 -
    S: C - Sunroof
    ax: Y - 3.08:1 non-locking differential
    tr: 5 - 4-speed manual overdrive
    GG -
    HH -

    How'd I do Mick?

Glenn, I decoded the VIN on this site: http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/626.shtml

Glenn: Can you tell me what options (besides A/C) the car has? And what the mileage is? Can you post an image of the door tag? Thanks.

The decoder at AFM is incorrect in calling a '79 05 body a Mach I. There was no Mach I after '78.

Also, the CUN (last six of VIN) is not the order cars are produced/assembled. That is the order in which VINs are assigned (scheduled for production). The assembly plant chooses in which order they are produced/assembled.

WOW,even more info! A BIG THANKS to you also! The pic of the door tag is in the gallery of pix located in the thread under "cars for sale"- look for the post by THE 1- going to keep it for sale as is as a roller for a little while,if no interest, then going to part out the good stuff. It has those year only inserts in the DP's and the int. 1/4 plastics.SEE Galery for pix of the whole deal. I'll get the mileage of the odo and update the thread later.I gotta wonder what that int. trim code of "sa" means??
    Thanks so much,Glenn

I don't know what the int trim code S is. I have seen it three times (SB before) but it is not in ANY books or Ford literature that I have seen.

Thanks for the corrections, Mick. I'm learning and am making progress. My service manual even indicates 05 as a Mach I. The website showed the same info, so that's the info I went with.

Glenn, FoxChassis is THE guru on this stuff. I got some of the info from my service manuals and some from the website listed. If he says the "MACH I" is incorrect, believe him. I'd use his info over my info everyday of the week and twice on Sundays.

AFM must have got their decoder info from the manual or some other place then. I've see it in more books than just the factory shop manual. The Catalog of Mustang ID Numbers 1964½-93 says the same thing.

HMMMmm? Its all good, doesnt surprise me that there is misleading info out in the world about this stuff-anyway,for me it was just more of a curiousity thing knowing what it is and what its started out its life as from the factory. I really appreciate the time and effort on everyones part for the info. By the way, i didnt think that "Mach 1" was used after 78 either.

ODO reads 63287- has a 6k Tach in it and rear defrost hatch glass- not sure if that tach was standard in these or not???

Yes, tachometer was standard in all Capris and Mustangs. Thanks for the update.
