    Default 85' radio removal

ok, I'm tired of my stock premium radio. What is the best way, and what do I need to un-hook to take the radio out...

    ...what ive already done.
    - un-screwed the two screws at the top of the radio holding it to the dash
    - un-screwed the bottom bolt, the radio is free.
    - un-hooked all the connectors behind the radio

I can push the radio back but, it looks like I need to remove the lower part of the hvac duckting to have more space to keep pushing back and maybe get it out.

    has anyone done this before?

im not 100 % sure, but most cars ive installed radios in pull out from the front. there should be a way to easily remove the dash or the bezel from the front. if you are planning on putting another radio in, all stereo shops will sell adaptors so you dont have to hack into the original wiring. the also sell adaptors to make a newer radio fit into a slot that is for an older different sized radio. hope this helps.

just removed my stock stereo. There is a bolt on the left side of the stereo housing that holds the dash to stereo housing remove it and pull the dash as much as you can. At the same time push the radio out to the left side. This is not easy or fun, try cussing at the car it seamed to help me. Hope this helps

More than likely that unit has to come out through the back. If you have some pactience it will come out through the drivers side. If it is the electronic version I am interested in it if you want to get rid of it.

its a gigantic pain in the ass, you just have to keep pushing and wiggling and it will come out. I remember there being some bracket on the side that I bent upwards and it gave me more room

Two screws to remove that lower duct diverter, and you will have all the room you need to manuver that radio out the back (does NOT come out the front). You'll have to wiggle it and angle it, but having that lower duct out of the way makes ALL the difference in the world.

Yeah....it was a HORRIBLE design by ford in '85-86. Believe they went to front loading/lock-in radios in '87. Of course...all the twin post radios in the early 80's and older were all loaded from the back - also a PITA.

This is what you need to get the job done

    Just kidding
I wanted to put a factory radio back in my 84 mustang, but I looked at the radio, looked at the space behind the dash, looked at the radio again, and put the radio back in the box. I didn't want to hassle with putting the thing back in. The hole was already cut for an aftermarket radio and I just got one that makes the factory radio look stone age anyway. If you take the ducting out (if you can do so easily?) there should be enough room.
