Default Duraspark ignition module mounting (84 5.0 carb)

I'm getting ready to replace my ignition module, which seems to work OK, but is leaking epoxy onto the frame rail and causing a mess. I'm also going to splice in a new 4-pin connector onto the engine harness, since the wires at the connector are missing insulation. (I'd love to just get the complete reproduction 84 engine wiring harness from FoxResto, but can't justify the $360 price.)

How is the ignition modules supposed to mount to the inner fender? Mine has a flat blade screw on one side (assume this is not factory) and a "c"-shaped metal clip on the other side. The clip attaches to the inner fender with a special plastic friction pin with an oval-shaped head that holds the metal clip. Unfortunately I broke the ribbed side of the plastic pin, so it no longer grabs into the fender.

Does the factory module mounting look like mine in the photo? Where can I get the special friction pin (assuming that was the factory method of mounting)? Does the module in the pic look like the factory module? Thanks.

Your module appears correct, especially with the white decal. I can't tell if it will work with the harness because I can't see the connectors. The correct 82-85 5.0 Module is D9VZ-12A199-A (Motorcraft P/N DY-184-C).

As far as the bracket and pin, I am fairly certain it comes with the module. I will have to doublecheck though. The LH screw should be the same size hex head with built-in washer. This one, however, is a self-tapping one.
    No longer visiting. Cheers.

I believe your module is not correct. I believe from the factory the bolts actually came through from the other side and into the module, not the way this is. My car is a dark charcoal and it's in a garage but I will try to get a decent picture for you.

all is correct except the left flat head screw, it should be a bolt like the other but longer.

Yep. welcome to 1984. This is OEM. Yours is backwards.

found a stock 84 gt in the local u pull it and it is identical to yours in the way the mod is mounted. the little bracket that bend over the frt tab has a plastic push pin(like door panel clip) that attaches it to the inner fender. I have the bracket if you need a picture.

FWIW, my '85 had the funky little "C" bracket too... Like the OP, the plastic fastner bit the dust at some point...

Based on the replies, it appears that the little "c" clip was from the factory. The mounting shown by homer302 appears to work, but I don't think that is factory.

So ... where can I get the little plastic pin that attaches to the "c" clip? I don't even know the proper name for the part.

I need to resurrect this thread cause I need to know what the clip looks like (off the box) and where I can find one? I'm trying to mound my duraspark to my 85GT. If anyone has a pic that shows the correct mounting location (in addition to that little clip) I would appreciate it.
    Cheers!

Does anyone have a picture of that little bracket over the right bolt hole (shown in the first pic)?
    Cheers!

Yes. This is the little bracket from the pic above that is on my car now.

    No. You can't have it.

But I do hope that you find one.

What's that whitish yellowish piece in the back? Are you sure I can't have it? Kidding, kidding...but seriously, take it off your car and send it to me. Lol

The little whitish piece is a push pin that holds the clip to the engine compartment sheetmetal ... unfortunately most of the ribs are stripped from mine so it's not really holding that well on that side. I haven't been able to figure out why Ford used such a complicated mounting method. When I replied in the posts above a few years ago, I didn't think that the pics from homer302 looked factory. But since then, I've seen pics of other cars that had the module mounted like his ... bolts from the inside. I guess Ford used at least two different mounting methods? Did they switch in 84?

    Saturn,

Mines the same as yours except for the flat head screw. I think a while back, I bolted the c-clip to the sheet metal...

That picture homer302 posted is interesting. I know the history on my 84 and know the module wasn't touched until I replaced it, and it was not bolted in from the underside like that. Not saying his isn't right, but mine is different. Welcome to the world of Ford products.

Can someone that has a duraspark mounted with that clip (pictured at the top of this thread) please post a top down pic? I'm trying to see how to mount my duraspark and it looks like the non clip side has to be mounted to a bulge in the sheet metal in order for both sides to be evenly attached (otherwise the side with the clip would stick out slightly farther than the side without it).

If anyone can post a top down pic I would appreciate it.
    Cheers!

Yes, the screw threads into a raised part of the sheet metal.

Look what I found in an old bag of bolts:

The bracket for the duraspark! It's mounted a little crooked, but it's in and tight, so problem solved.
    Cheers!

I agree. Now I just have to polish my duraspark box again and add the sticker. I can't belive I had that bracket the whole time. I think it came with the few parts I got from the previous owner?
    Cheers!
